Check the transition before taking a job
Eligible young dependants in Ireland who still use a Stamp 3 residence card as evidence of employment rights should check its expiry and their renewal position now. Immigration Service Delivery’s transition notice ends the temporary evidence arrangement on 26 November 2026. It concerns children granted family reunification with specified employment-permit holders or researchers, rather than every young person holding Stamp 3.
The notice changed eligible permissions to Stamp 1G conditions from 26 November 2025 and says a replacement card is normally issued at renewal. Its eligibility text, however, refers to meeting criteria on 26 November 2024, a different year from the change date. That unexplained reference should not be silently corrected: someone whose qualifying permission began between those dates should ask ISD how the cutoff applies before relying on the transitional arrangement.
Show the employer the letter together with a valid card
The downloadable Notice to Employers is the practical evidence document for an eligible person still holding Stamp 3. It says the applicant must have applied for and been granted family reunification under the Non-EEA policy, with Stamp 3 endorsed on a current, in-date Irish Residence Permit card. The employer may accept the notice together with that card as evidence that a separate employment permit is unnecessary.
The letter says its evidential validity lasts until the current card expires, and that eligible holders should have renewed to Stamp 1G by 26 November 2026 at the latest. The earlier card-expiry date therefore still matters. An illustrative dependant whose card expires before that November endpoint cannot treat the endpoint as extra validity for the expired card. Keep the employer letter and current card together; the general letter alone does not establish a named person’s immigration status.
Separate eligible childhood permission from an exceptional adult grant
The family-reunification FAQ distinguishes people originally admitted as minor children from adult children admitted exceptionally. It says someone first granted permission under 18, or aged 18–23 in full-time education under the previous treatment, can work under the described arrangements. An adult child admitted because of exceptional circumstances does not automatically acquire employment rights, although an employment-permit application in their own right remains possible.
For eligible children of employment-permit holders, the FAQ describes Stamp 4 after at least five years on family-reunification permission, or where the parent has become an Irish citizen; otherwise it describes Stamp 1G. Both permit employment without a separate employment permit. It instructs people awaiting their next online renewal to use the transition resource rather than contact ISD merely to request a replacement card. The unresolved date wording is a separate eligibility question, not a routine request for an early card change.
Register at 16 and check the minor’s fee exemption
ISD’s registration guidance says children aged 15 and younger generally need not register unless specifically directed, while those required to register for the first time must do so as early as possible after turning 16. Children who have already become Irish citizens through naturalisation do not register an immigration permission at 16.
The guidance also distinguishes stamp categories: children of PhD students or approved scholarship students are listed for Stamp 2A, while certain investor or entrepreneur children receive Stamp 4. Those differences mean the employment-permit-family transition should not be applied to every student’s child. All children under 18 who are required to register are exempt from the registration fee across stamp categories. Establish age at registration and the actual permission category, rather than assuming that turning 16 creates a payable adult registration.
Prepare the registration file separately from work evidence
The October 2026 required-documents page says a first dependent registration requires the primary sponsor to attend. General requirements include original supporting documents, proof of address and the corresponding entry visa or landing permission where applicable. Online renewals use scanned copies; the page warns that missing required documents prevent processing.
For people who must pay, the standard registration charge is EUR300, paid by credit or debit card, subject to the statutory exemptions. This is a registration charge, not a fee to activate the downloadable employer notice. Use the official required-documents resource to identify the correct stamp checklist before submitting the renewal; retain the card-expiry date and transition endpoint as separate dates when arranging continued evidence of work rights.
