Jamaica’s simplified passport renewal excludes name and marital-status changes

PICA offers different renewal channels for adults. Applicants must check which conditions apply to the online service and which belong to the simplified paper form before preparing their documents.

The simplified form has specific conditions

Jamaica’s Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency, PICA, restricts its simplified adult renewal form to people who were at least eighteen when they obtained the passport being renewed. The name, birth date and birthplace must match, and marital status must be unchanged. This is a current guide to choosing a renewal channel, not an announcement that these conditions have just been introduced.

The instruction sheet, updated in June 2025, requires a ten-year passport issued after September 2001. It must have no more than one year remaining, except where visa pages are exhausted, or have expired no more than two years ago. It must be undamaged and never reported lost or stolen. Someone changing identity particulars or replacing a missing passport should not select the simplified form merely because they have held a Jamaican passport before.

Online renewal is a separate adult service

PICA’s official online renewal resource excludes children renewing a passport issued while they were minors, lost passports and old handwritten blue passports. It describes eligibility for adult machine-readable passports issued after September 2001 that have expired or are approaching expiry within a year. Do not automatically apply the simplified paper form’s two-year expiry limit to every online case; the published instructions describe separate channels.

Have the current passport, digital photograph, working email and relevant birth, adoption or citizenship information ready. PICA uses email for application messages.

Check photograph requirements before submission

PICA’s photograph resource calls for recent images taken within six months. Paper applications require two identical photographs with a full frontal view and clear facial features, without distracting objects, shadows, creases or ink marks. The agency specifies backgrounds suited to the applicant’s complexion or grey or white hair; a generic image prepared for another country’s visa may not meet these instructions.

Religious head coverings are permitted subject to the stated form and visibility conditions. The face must remain clearly identifiable. No embossed seal should be attached to the photograph. Use PICA’s dedicated photograph guidance when instructing the photographer, and distinguish physical-photo certification from the digital upload process rather than assuming the same handling steps apply to both. The agency specifies a face length of 25 to 35 millimetres and a margin of 3 to 4 millimetres between the head and photograph edge. Check those measurements before accepting the finished prints.

Overseas applicants must follow their mission’s procedure

The Jamaican Embassy in Washington’s passport guidelines provide a separate route for cases needing the ordinary application, including changes of name and replacement documents. Its adult checklist identifies the existing passport, original birth, adoption or citizenship evidence and original proof of any name change. Where a passport has been expired for ten years or more, additional valid identification is required.

The embassy’s in-person applications are by appointment. For mailed applications, its instructions specify certification of the relevant form section by a notary, with the same notary certifying a photograph. Those are Washington submission instructions, not a universal promise that every Jamaican mission accepts the same delivery method. Applicants elsewhere should confirm their own mission’s procedure before sending original identity records abroad. Its replacement checklist separately requests the lost-passport form for missing or stolen documents and explains when a police complaint report is needed. Check that category before using renewal paperwork.

Obtain the price and collection option before paying

The online renewal resource says payment is by Visa or Mastercard and that the amount varies with location. Its Cost Checker is the named tool for establishing the passport and delivery charges for the actual address. Overseas consular charges can be additional.

Keep the receipt and application reference after choosing the delivery or collection option. The simplified paper instructions separately direct applicants to PICA or their mission for current fees and turnaround times. There is no universal processing deadline in these resources that guarantees a passport will be available for a booked flight; confirm the applicable service before relying on a travel date.
