Check the extra months against the issued visa
I-Kiribati citizens living in Kiribati with seasonal job offers in New Zealand should check their permitted stay and travel contribution before accepting contracts. Immigration New Zealand allows them two extra months beyond the usual seven-month seasonal limit. The concession does not make every visa nine months long.
The current seasonal visa page sets the usual maximum at seven months in eleven. The Kiribati exception requires citizenship and residence there. Applicants must be eighteen; partners and children cannot be included. The advertised starting cost is NZD325, rather than a verified Kiribati-specific quotation. Check the application-location payment instructions before paying.
Enter the Kiribati recruitment process before arranging departure
The Kiribati Overseas Employment Unit describes the local route as an application through the Island Council. Its work-ready pool is a recruitment mechanism: passing the tests does not itself produce a job or a departure date. The unit says it contacts successful candidates according to overseas employers' needs. Someone already in the pool should therefore check their status with the unit rather than buy flights on the assumption that registration guarantees selection.
The same official page identifies pre-departure training, travel preparation and communication with workers abroad as unit responsibilities. It gives [email protected] and an in-person contact at headquarters in Bairiki for work-ready-pool updates. Ask that office which recruitment stage is outstanding and whether any proposed recruiter is part of the recognised process. Its page also describes Australian programmes; those descriptions should not be mistaken for the New Zealand visa application.
Resolve the photograph discrepancy before submitting the documents
Immigration New Zealand's June 2025 applicant guide requires a passport, signed employment agreement, insurance evidence and any required chest X-ray certificate. It says an employer using a recruitment agent cannot require the worker to pay that agent a fee. This is distinct from the government visa charge or any separately agreed travel costs. Obtain a written breakdown rather than treating all requested money as one immigration fee.
There is a precise checklist discrepancy: that guide asks for one recent passport photograph, whereas the current visa webpage asks for two acceptable photographs. Take the current webpage checklist to the submitting agent and resolve the number before lodging. The guide also says the approval records the employer, job, location and expiry date. A recruitment promise cannot replace those issued conditions. Leaving by that expiry is required; an unfinished employment discussion supplies no extra lawful stay.
Separate the Fiji airfare contribution from the whole journey
The official employer pastoral-care instructions specify a special airfare calculation for Kiribati workers: the employer must pay half the airfare between New Zealand and Nadi, Fiji. This is narrower than half of the entire journey from Kiribati. Before signing, request an itinerary and a cost breakdown showing the Kiribati-to-Fiji portion, the Fiji-to-New Zealand portion, and who pays each amount. Do not assume a generic statement about shared return fares covers both legs.
Those instructions also require arrival arrangements, suitable accommodation and an induction. During employment, support includes work transport, protective equipment, basic workplace facilities and translated safety instructions. These are concrete questions for the employer before departure: who meets the worker, where accommodation is, and how safety information will be understood. The published duties establish responsibilities, but they do not establish the price of a particular room or ticket; those figures still need the actual contract.
Check deductions and support against the take-home pay
The separate worker-rights page requires employers to explain proposed deductions, including accommodation, insurance or travel, and obtain written approval. Workers can request a change or cancellation in writing; the employer must act as soon as possible or within two weeks. The page distinguishes free transport to work from personal journeys that may be chargeable. A gross wage therefore does not reveal what reaches the worker's account.
It also requires an explanation of insurance coverage, approved safe accommodation and access to help. Concerns can be raised with the Labour Inspectorate, a country liaison officer or the country's high commission. Keep the agreement, payslips and written deduction instructions available. These records let a worker identify the disputed payment or promised service precisely, without assuming that an unresolved workplace complaint changes the visa expiry or authorised employer.
