Kiribati visitors face a 90-day annual limit under its visa waiver

The exemption order sets an overall limit, while some official travel guidance describes a shorter stay on arrival. Visitors should confirm the permission actually granted and check passport validity against departure.

The exemption depends on nationality and an annual ceiling

Kiribati’s Immigration Entry and Visa Exemption Order 2023 waives advance travel and transit visas for listed citizens. It took effect on 1 September 2023. This is a current guide, not a new waiver announcement.

The list includes Australia, Canada, India, China, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. Residence in a listed country is not citizenship. The order limits exempt stays to ninety days in any twelve-month period. Count earlier visits against that ceiling.

A maximum exemption is different from the stay granted

The Kiribati Immigration Division’s current visitor page describes visa-exempt tourists and family or friend visitors receiving permission on arrival, with a maximum visitor stay of up to three months. However, official guidance for particular nationalities can describe a shorter initial admission.

The UK government says British visitors are normally granted one month on arrival, and Canada’s current advice says Canadian tourists do not need a visa for stays up to thirty days. Those statements should not be silently converted into an assurance that every eligible traveller receives ninety days at the border. Check the date on the permission granted and ask Kiribati Immigration before planning a longer stay. The sources establish an annual exemption ceiling and differing descriptions of initial admission; they do not justify ignoring a shorter individual expiry.

Count passport validity from the intended departure

The exemption order requires an ICAO-compliant passport or travel document valid for at least six months on the day of departure from Kiribati. The Immigration Division repeats the departure-based rule. Build the passport check around the end of the proposed trip, especially if an extension is being considered.

Canada’s advice likewise specifies six months beyond the expected departure for ordinary Canadian passports. The UK page instead describes six months after arrival and asks for two blank pages. Because that wording is less demanding than the Kiribati order for a longer trip, British visitors should obtain clarification rather than assume the arrival-based wording overrides the destination’s own requirement. The relevant resources serve different audiences, and Kiribati authorities determine admission.

Non-exempt visitors need a complete advance application

The Immigration Division directs people from non-exempt countries to apply before travel. Its official visitor application form asks for a completed signed form, passport or travel-document details, recent colour photographs, financial support and evidence of the means to leave Kiribati. Medical and police certificates are required where applicable, rather than automatically for every short visitor. Canada’s advice gives a visa-processing range of ten to thirty days; applicants should allow time rather than expect an immediate decision.

The form accepts different types of support evidence, including a completed sponsorship form or funds in the applicant’s own name. It separately asks for evidence supporting a genuine tourist or family visit. Where a partner or dependent children are included, relationship or guardianship evidence is relevant. Use the form’s purpose-specific checklist instead of assuming that a flight reservation alone completes the file. Any person helping prepare the form must complete the assistance declaration where required.

Confirm charges and the actual deadline before paying

The Immigration Division’s page publishes a visitor-visa charge of $40 for non-exempt applicants and a $60 extension charge for exempt and non-exempt nationals. It directs applicants to email the completed form and scanned evidence to [email protected] and follow the officer’s secure electronic-payment instructions. Confirm the currency and remittance details with that officer before sending money; the displayed fee amounts do not by themselves establish a payment destination.

The UK entry page separately lists an Australian-dollar twenty departure tax at the airport. That is distinct from an application or extension charge. A visitor considering extra time should ask Immigration how the requested extension interacts with the admitted expiry and annual limit. None of these charges establishes that an extension has been granted or that travel on an expiring passport will be accepted.
