Laos eVisa travellers must separate approval, entry-port and digital-form deadlines
Current guidance distinguishes the tourist eVisa approval window from the permitted stay and the separate digital arrival and departure formalities.

Three clocks govern a tourist journey
Travellers planning Laos visits should distinguish the period for using an electronic visa, the stay granted after entry and the short window for submitting digital border forms. This is current procedural guidance checked on 29 October 2026, rather than an announcement of a newly introduced visa. Completing one requirement does not complete the others, particularly for passengers combining flights, international trains and land crossings.
The Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs eVisa frequently asked questions states that the approval is usable for a maximum of 60 days after the approval letter is received. The tourist stay is 30 days, and the permission is single entry. A traveller should therefore check both the approval letter before departure and the immigration permission recorded on arrival; a 60-day approval window does not authorize a 60-day visit.
Match the crossing to the approved route
The official eVisa information page lists nine designated entry points: Wattay, Luang Prabang and Pakse airports; Lao-Thai Friendship Bridges I, II and IV; Boten International Checkpoint; Boten Railway Station; and Khamsavath Railway Station. Use that named information resource to compare the actual crossing on the transport booking with the accepted ports before paying. A ticket merely described as entering Laos does not establish that the crossing accepts this electronic permission.
For example, an illustrative traveller entering by international train should check the station itself, rather than assume that approval for a road checkpoint covers every nearby railway arrival. The information page directs approved passengers to present their passport and approval letter in the eVisa lane. Border officers still make the final immigration decision; the electronic approval should be carried as a travel document, not treated as an unconditional admission guarantee.
Passport, payment and application corrections
The eVisa terms and conditions restrict this facility to ordinary passports, excluding temporary, emergency and special passports. The passport used for the application must be presented at entry. Check validity before starting: the FAQ specifies more than 180 days remaining from arrival. Renewing a passport after approval therefore requires attention to the passport-linked permission rather than simply travelling with a different document.
Applicants upload a passport biographical page and a recent 4-by-6-centimetre photograph. The information page asks for the complete passport page, including the machine-readable lines. Its normal processing estimate is three working days after a complete application and payment, with longer processing possible; the published closure calendar includes Lao National Day on 2 December. Allow additional time around closures instead of treating the estimate as a boarding guarantee.
Use the official fee calculator to select the nationality shown in the passport and establish the applicable amount; it expressly excludes bank charges. This review does not assign one universal dollar price. Fees are non-refundable. The terms also give applicants 30 days to correct and resubmit information after a consular modification request, after which cancellation is possible. Monitor application messages while arrangements remain changeable.
Digital arrival and departure forms remain separate
The UK government entry guidance reports that foreign nationals using Wattay, Luang Prabang or Pakse airports, or Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge I, must complete the Lao Digital Immigration Form within three days before arrival and again within three days before departure. At these four checkpoints it replaces paper arrival and departure cards. The digital-form coverage is therefore narrower than the nine-port eVisa list, and it does not replace a visa.
British citizen passport holders are told to obtain a visa and apply electronically at least five days ahead. Other nationalities should first check the Lao eligibility information rather than inherit British requirements or assume that an eVisa is needed despite an applicable exemption. Employment, study and business purposes require their appropriate immigration route: the eVisa terms prohibit paid or unpaid work during a tourist visit. Before travel, settle the nationality route, accepted crossing and documents; shortly before each border movement, complete the applicable digital form and retain the resulting confirmation.
