Latvia requires Latvian documents for residence renewals and sponsor files
Latvia’s September immigration reform distinguishes the language accepted for initial visa and residence applications from the language required for renewals and employer invitations.

Sort the documents by application stage
Latvia’s Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs, OCMA, says the Immigration Law that took effect on 15 September 2026 changed the languages accepted for immigration documents. Initial visa and temporary-residence applications may use Latvian or English, while temporary-residence renewals, permanent-residence applications and documents submitted by inviters for invitations or sponsorship must be in Latvian. This current follow-up concerns an existing reform, rather than a new November translation requirement.
The distinction is important for a worker whose initial application used English. The same file should not automatically be reused for renewal without checking the current language requirements. Employers should separately review their own invitation material, even where the worker’s visa documents can be in English. The OCMA reform notice is the resource for identifying this difference; ask the responsible office which certification and translation formalities apply to each foreign-issued document before commissioning translations.
The reform notice also describes changes to some permit durations and annual registration. Do not infer that every existing card has acquired a new expiry date. Use the document and decision actually issued, and obtain case-specific instructions if the new procedure appears different from an older approval.
Employers should check the invitation evidence and recruitment stage
OCMA’s written-invitation resource describes electronic submission by the inviter, including secure electronic signatures for the application and accompanying documents or use of the official e-service. For employment invitations it identifies the State Employment Agency’s opinion on recruiting the foreign worker. An employer should resolve that stage before treating an offer letter as sufficient immigration sponsorship.
The same resource requests the relevant employment contract or draft and qualification evidence. Regulated professions require the appropriate recognition or equivalent evidence; for other occupations it describes education or professional-experience documentation, with specified exceptions. Use the checklist for the occupation and invitation involved, rather than assume a translated curriculum vitae supplies every qualification requirement.
The practical task is to make the employer’s submitted position, worker’s qualifications and contract describe the same job. Ask who will sign and submit the file, how required translations will be certified and what reference the worker should use at the consular stage. Retain the approved invitation information alongside the version of the contract on which it was based.
Visa-free visiting does not automatically authorise employment
OCMA’s employment-visa guidance says a person using that route must obtain the visa with the right to employment before entering Latvia, including where the nationality is normally visa-exempt for another travel purpose. It distinguishes short-stay work within the 90-in-180-day limit from a long-stay visa, and separately describes seasonal work. The applicable employment remark on the visa is therefore a material part of the permission, not simply an administrative label.
That resource also lists situations in which separate confirmation of employment rights is not required. Those exceptions depend on the activity and circumstances; they should be checked directly rather than extended to every short engagement or visitor. Union citizens have a different framework from third-country applicants. A worker unsure which route applies should establish nationality, existing status, proposed activity and intended duration before booking travel.
The Foreign Ministry’s Applying for a Visa page identifies the competent Latvian mission and explains that another Schengen state representing Latvia does not issue Latvian long-stay visas. Use it to find the correct filing authority. An appointment for a short-stay application at a convenient representation should not be assumed to cover a national employment visa.
Check the current checklist, fees and individual expiry
The Foreign Ministry’s visa-document resource requests a qualifying travel document, signed application, photograph, insurance, payment and purpose-specific supporting evidence. It is a useful preparation checklist alongside the mission’s local instructions. Its published employment-maintenance guidance also refers to sectoral wage information, so applicants should not substitute an ordinary tourist daily allowance for the financial evidence required for work.
The Ministry’s fee page lists EUR 90 for a long-stay visa, with exemptions for specified cases. That is the visa application charge, not a verified all-inclusive total for employer invitations, residence processing, translations or service-provider charges. Have the responsible authority confirm the assessed payments for the actual sequence of applications before transferring money.
For an existing resident, the immediate deadline is the expiry and renewal instructions applicable to the current permission. The September language change does not supply an automatic grace period for missing translations. Prepare the correctly translated file early, confirm the accepted submission channel with the authority if an online service is unavailable, and retain evidence of submission. Payment or a translation order alone does not establish that a renewal has been lodged or granted.
