Lebanese parents registering a birth abroad should check the marriage record and follow the file

Check the child and marriage records before posting the application

Lebanese fathers registering a child born abroad should check that the parents' marriage is recorded in Lebanon and that the foreign birth document matches family records. Sweden's Lebanese embassy expressly requires prior marriage registration. This civil-registration guide does not establish citizenship through a Lebanese mother or replace a passport application.

The Swedish mission asks for the application, both parents' passport copies, a Lebanese family extract and registered Lebanese marriage certificate. Its birth-document checklist varies by issuing country: Sweden uses the detailed English Personbevis120 and Swedish Tax Agency certification, while Denmark, Norway and Finland have their own listed issuing and foreign-ministry authentication routes. The page also broadly says documents must be authenticated through the issuing country's foreign ministry. Ask the mission to reconcile that general instruction with its specific Swedish checklist before paying for authentication.

Use the London checklist for names, copies and return postage

London's separate birth-registration service asks for a completed printed application, the original local birth certificate with two copies, parents' passport copies and a family civil extract with two copies. If the spouse is not Lebanese, it also asks for the parents' Lebanese marriage certificate with two copies. This is a document-specific checklist, rather than a general instruction to send every original identity document.

Name changes need particular attention: London requires the original change-of-name deed or deed poll with two copies, and says the birth certificate must show the new name followed by the former name. For postal filing, include a stamped self-addressed return envelope. London lists no consular birth-registration fee. It says records pass by diplomatic pouch through Foreign Affairs to the Interior Ministry, and makes applicants responsible for following up registration in Lebanon. Posting the package is therefore an initial step, not evidence that the Lebanese register has already changed.

Follow the file in Lebanon using the transaction number

The Directorate General of Civil Status explains what happens after a foreign birth record is prepared at a Lebanese embassy. The interested family receives an attestation to present to Foreign Affairs in Lebanon for a transaction number. That number is then used to follow up with the Interior Ministry's expatriates department in Beirut. Keep it with the consular receipt and a full copy of the supporting records.

The domestic procedure lists the Foreign Affairs referral, the mission-prepared record and local birth certificate for a minor. Where parents' details do not match the Lebanese records, or the file is incomplete, it is returned through Foreign Affairs for correction or completion before execution. The table displays fifteen days and no fee for the civil-status procedure. This is a domestic administrative estimate, not an end-to-end promise covering overseas mailing, diplomatic transmission or a file sent back to correct a parent's name. Adult birth registrations involve additional checks and supporting material; families registering a newborn should not substitute the adult-file requirements for the minor's checklist.

Plan the passport separately from the registration timetable

General Security's instructions for passport applications abroad call for mission-certified identity evidence, the passport form, two certified white-background photographs and contact details. For children under fifteen, they allow available official Lebanese or foreign documents with a passport photograph authenticated by the mission. That provision does not establish that every unregistered birth is automatically eligible for a passport; ask the mission which civil evidence it accepts in the child's circumstances.

For a minor's individual passport abroad, General Security additionally requires the stated legal-guardian travel authorisation and certification. Its published transport-based estimates are twenty to forty working days through DHL, or seven working days for the urgent DHL Express route. These concern the passport process, not birth registration. Sweden separately estimates three to five months for a complete birth-registration application and lists that service as free. Confirm the child's registration stage, passport eligibility and any separate passport or courier charge before committing to travel dates.
