Prepare the residence documents for study

Foreign nationals planning to study in Lesotho should prepare the student residence file separately from their university admission application. The government’s residence-permit service charter identifies a study category requiring an application letter, admission letter, completed medical form, certified passport copy and certified academic certificates and transcripts. It also requires a certified copy of the passport page recording entry stamps, extensions or previous permission, and a visa certificate where applicable.

The study checklist exempts minors from police clearance; adult applicants should include that clearance. This is a current guide to a published service, not a claim that Lesotho introduced a new student route on 2 November. Use the residence charter to identify the evidence needed for the immigration application and ask the receiving office which certification and medical-form arrangements apply. A school acceptance letter alone does not provide the remaining identity, health and immigration-history evidence.

Check the entry-visa package before departure

The government publishes a separate entry-visa checklist for study. It includes the applicant’s letter, a sponsor invitation, school admission, a statement of tuition fees for the course, confirmation of registration from the Ministry of Education, applicant and sponsor passport copies, and a residence permit where applicable. Previous educational certificates are also listed.

For financial evidence, that checklist specifies a funding letter or bank statement demonstrating sufficient support for the study period. It additionally lists a medical report, insurance and a return ticket. The entry resource therefore helps a student and sponsor agree who will supply funding and institutional evidence before departure, rather than treating a tuition receipt as the entire application. Where a requested document is unclear or does not fit the course, obtain clarification from the issuing office instead of replacing it with an assumed alternative.

Distinguish permit duration from the length of the course

Lesotho’s Home Affairs immigration page identifies a four-year study permit among its residence-permit types. It separately describes single-entry visas for a single journey, valid for three months, and multiple-entry visas for multiple journeys, valid for six months. Those descriptions concern different documents and should not be read as a promise that every student automatically receives four years of residence.

The ministry says responsibility for adjudication remains with government even where a service provider processes applications. Its immigration page helps applicants locate the competent authority and distinguish processing assistance from the actual decision-maker. Before arranging repeated travel, check the permission actually issued, its expiry and entry conditions. A multi-year degree programme does not itself settle how a particular visa or permit can be used. The ministry lists its office at the corner of Moshoeshoe and Lerotholi Roads and the contact number +266 8005 0074 for enquiries.

Use university assistance without confusing tuition and permit costs

The National University of Lesotho’s 2025/2026 postgraduate handbook directs students seeking help with study permits and visas to the International Students Office within the Dean of Students Affairs. That is an institutional assistance point for NUL students, rather than an immigration authority for every college in Lesotho. Other students should ask their own institution which office provides equivalent support.

The handbook also explains that financial clearance and academic registration are separate university processes, and that students remain responsible for mandatory fees whether sponsored or self-funded. The handbook says students cannot register, enter university accommodation or attend classes until the university receives proof of the required fee payment. Its stated academic-year charges should not be transplanted into a later year without confirmation. Obtain the current course invoice from the university and a separate government quotation for the relevant immigration transaction.

No universal university-permit fee or course-specific application deadline was verified here. Ask Home Affairs to confirm the amount, payment method and filing timetable for the actual course. Keep those answers alongside the admission letter and passport expiry when planning arrival.
