Liechtenstein’s residence lottery separates applicants by where they work

Liechtenstein’s residence lottery has different conditions for people working in the country and those living there without local employment. Current official pages say the participation form will be available again from February 2027.

Choose the category that matches the proposed employment

The Migration and Passport Office’s employment-category page says working applicants must be employed in Liechtenstein; employment abroad is not allowed in that group. The office identifies twenty-eight residence permissions a year for employed EEA citizens through the lottery.

The procedure has a preliminary draw and a final draw, with rounds in spring and autumn. An applicant selected initially must provide the additional evidence requested, such as a passport copy and employment contract, and satisfy the relevant legal conditions before entering the final draw. Initial selection is therefore a stage in the process rather than an unconditional permission to relocate. Use the official employment-category page to check that the proposed job and supporting contract match the application.

Understand the restriction on local work in the other group

The separate page for applicants without gainful employment in Liechtenstein describes eight annual lottery permissions for non-working EEA citizens. It prohibits employment in Liechtenstein in that applicant group but allows employment abroad. The wording distinguishes the location of the work; it should not be simplified into a statement that every person in the group must be retired.

That resource requires EEA nationality, a complete application submitted on time, no multiple applications and timely fee payment. Swiss and UK nationals are expressly excluded from the lottery. Selected preliminary applicants must provide further requested evidence, including a passport copy and proof of financial means. Applicants should resolve eligibility and document questions with the office before paying, rather than assuming that residence elsewhere in Europe establishes EEA nationality.

Follow the digital procedure rather than old postal instructions

The administration’s digital-registration project page marks the system as implemented. It explains that applications and subsequent stages use a digital form, replacing physical dispatch of documents, with fees paid by credit card. It also describes notification of both selected and unselected participants. This resource helps readers identify the intended submission channel when they encounter older accounts of postal forms and bank transfers.

The separate launch announcement dates the electronic system to 25 January 2024. That announcement explains that participants receive an acknowledgement after registering and email notification after the draw, that procedural steps are logged, and that a judge supervises the lottery. It also says information in the electronic system is deleted after a round finishes. Keep personal copies of the acknowledgement, requested evidence and correspondence instead of relying on indefinite access to a completed round. The 2024 launch is historical background, not a fresh November announcement. The announcement distinguishes the 25 January launch from the supporting ordinance amendment, which it says took effect on 1 January 2024.

Check the next form and budget for both stages

The current employment-category page says its participation form will be available again from February 2027. It lists CHF 100 for the preliminary draw and CHF 500 for participation in the final draw. Those are stage-specific participation fees, not a promise of selection or a consolidated quotation for every later residence-document expense. Confirm the current payment instructions in the official form when it reopens.

No complete verified 2027 filing window or draw calendar was established here. Do not reuse the launch announcement’s 2024 deadlines. Check the official form when available.

Article 37 of the consolidated Persons Free Movement Act provides an additional deadline after a successful draw: the resulting right to a residence permit is personal, cannot be transferred, and expires if it is not exercised within six months after receipt of notification. A successful applicant should therefore keep the notification and establish the required next steps promptly rather than assume that a place can be sold, passed to a relative or kept indefinitely. Article 38 also provides for a reasoned administrative decision where participation conditions are not met or an exclusion ground applies. The official legal text helps readers distinguish those statutory consequences from the practical submission instructions.
