Identify the extension route before the stay expires

Macao visitors whose plans change should identify whether they need an ordinary extension or an exceptional extension of authorization to stay. The government service pages, updated on 2 September 2026, set different advance application periods: five days for the ordinary route and ten days for the exceptional route. This is current deadline guidance checked on 29 October, not an announcement that a new entitlement has begun today.

The government extension overview explains that a justified reason is required, giving examples such as force majeure, humanitarian grounds or other exceptionally substantiated circumstances. It separately identifies people awaiting residence-authorization decisions who need to maintain lawful stay. A request to remain longer is therefore not automatically approved merely because the visitor has sufficient money or has booked an appointment. Read the overview first to identify the appropriate service.

Ordinary applications need supporting evidence

The ordinary extension service covers requests up to a maximum of 90 accumulated days and directs the applicant or legal agent to apply five days before the current authorization expires. Its checklist includes the completed extension form, a copy of the identity or travel document with the relevant used pages and latest authorization slip, and documentary support for the reason. A medical certificate supporting hospitalization is one published example.

Originals must be shown for authentication where copies are submitted. A legal agent needs a certified authorization letter and identification copy. Use the specific ordinary-extension service to download the correct form and prepare the evidence rather than present only a flight reservation. The service states that it is free and gives a one-working-day performance pledge starting after the documents have been confirmed correctly prepared; that does not guarantee approval of an incomplete or unjustified request.

Exceptional requests follow a different checklist

The exceptional-extension page directs applications ten days before expiry and uses a separate application form. It also asks for the passport or accepted identity document, latest authorization slip and evidence supporting the reason. Where family members are included, the page identifies an additional form for the personal information of reuniting relatives. Use that checklist rather than submit an ordinary-extension form for a case that requires exceptional consideration.

The exceptional service is also free, but its processing time depends on the circumstances. Both service pages warn that late applications or those obviously lacking justification may be rejected initially. An illustrative visitor facing a documented medical interruption should therefore establish the correct category promptly and gather medical evidence while the current stay remains valid, rather than assume that a later appointment will retrospectively extend permission.

Passport validity can constrain the available stay

The government non-resident immigration-clearance resource requires an accepted travel document valid at least 90 days beyond the intended stay and explains that the maximum stay is generally limited by that remaining-validity rule. A visitor should compare the passport expiry with the requested extension dates before applying. The existing admission slip and passport together establish important limits; an accommodation booking cannot replace either.

The same entry resource distinguishes advance-visa nationalities, including Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Vietnam, from travellers who can use applicable exemption or arrival-permit routes. An extension after admission should not be treated as a way to bypass an advance-entry requirement. This review does not establish that leaving and returning will preserve an existing extension or create a fresh entitlement for every nationality.

Keep Macao permission separate from other destinations

UK government guidance for British citizen passports describes visa-free Macao visits of up to six months for tourism and unpaid business activity, while other purposes need the appropriate permission. That nationality-specific period should not be generalized to every visitor or confused with the ordinary-extension service maximum. Use the actual authorization granted to calculate the individual deadline.

Macao has its own immigration controls. Someone also visiting mainland China or Hong Kong must establish the permission for each destination independently rather than assume the Macao extension covers the entire journey. The immediate actions are to check the current stay slip and passport, identify the extension category, submit the correct evidence before its five-day or ten-day deadline, and obtain the result through the official service. If no extension is granted, arrange departure within the existing permission.
