The arrival-visa notice distinguishes two nationality categories
Malawi’s official e-visa portal carries a notice effective 24 February 2026 allowing nationals of Category Two countries to obtain visas on arrival at designated ports. Category One nationals must still obtain a visa or prior authorisation before departure. This is a current follow-up to that February arrangement, not a claim that all visitors received a new October exemption.
The notice addresses airlines as well as travellers: it says eligible Category Two passengers should be allowed to board without a pre-issued visa, subject to the immigration conditions. It continues to encourage advance online applications. Use the portal’s visa-eligibility assistance to identify the treatment of the actual nationality and travel document; a friend’s successful arrival application does not establish another traveller’s eligibility.
Follow the application process if permission is needed in advance
The Immigration Department’s application-process page directs new users to create an account, complete the online form and enter traveller information matching the passport biodata, together with travel details, the photograph and related documents. The page then describes paying the visa and convenience fees online and receiving confirmation that the application has been submitted.
After approval, applicants must download and print the electronic visa and present it at the port of entry. The process page warns against travelling before obtaining the e-visa, while the later, specific February notice provides arrival access for the eligible category. Those instructions should be read together rather than treating the general process warning as cancellation of the specific arrival arrangement. A traveller who cannot establish arrival eligibility should resolve advance permission before departure.
Check the passport, scans and permission dates carefully
The portal FAQ says applicants must upload scanned documents rather than camera photographs of the passport or residence permit. It also says the e-visa bears the particulars of the passport used in the application and that the traveller must use that passport to enter. Someone holding two passports should not apply with one and assume the permission transfers to the other.
The FAQ describes a three-working-day processing period and says validity begins on issuance. Allow time for the decision and check its actual dates; the published processing indication is not a guarantee of approval by a flight deadline. The Department’s visa overview further distinguishes permission for entry from permission to remain, work or conduct business. A visitor planning those activities must examine the relevant permit route.
Published single-entry fee pages do not agree
The portal FAQ lists USD50 for single entry, USD150 for six-month multiple entry and USD250 for twelve-month multiple entry. UK government advice for British citizens likewise describes USD50 single-entry visas on arrival and recommends carrying US dollars for payment. That British guidance does not establish the nationality category of every other passport holder.
The Immigration Department’s separate online-fees page still lists USD75 for a single-entry application, although it agrees on the USD150 and USD250 multiple-entry figures. It specifies Visa or Mastercard payment and says refusal does not produce a refund. Confirm the product and amount generated by the official payment channel before proceeding. The resources reviewed do not give a clear dated explanation reconciling the single-entry difference, so this report cannot present one universal online price as settled.
Retain the approval and distinguish it from a submission receipt
The Department’s process page makes the sequence clear: completing the form and payment starts review, while approval is followed by a downloadable document. Keep the issued permission with the passport used to apply. The Department’s visa overview says entry remains subject to immigration examination and that a visa does not create an automatic right of admission.
For illustration, a Category One traveller preparing to fly must resolve advance permission even though an eligible Category Two traveller may use arrival processing. Both still need acceptable documents and compliance with the conditions of their own trip. British government guidance requires at least six months of passport validity after arrival. Before travel, identify the nationality route, application status, passport match and payable fee; none is answered simply by seeing that an e-visa account has been created.
