Foreign students in Malawi need resident registration after getting their permit

Malawi’s National Registration Bureau includes student-permit holders in its resident-foreigner registration procedure. Its guidance identifies a late-registration charge after thirty days from acquiring the permit.

Add resident registration to the student’s arrival plan

Foreign students who receive a Malawi student permit should also check their resident-foreigner identity registration. The National Registration Bureau lists student permits among the documents supporting a non-Malawian resident’s NR2 application at a District Registration Office. Its procedure identifies late-registration charges after thirty days from acquiring the permit, so receiving immigration permission should not be treated as the final administrative task.

The bureau’s instructions describe checking the form and residence evidence, paying the prescribed application charge and capturing personal data and biometrics. The registration receipt is retained with the NR2 form for collection of the identity document after the stated thirty-day period. Use the bureau’s national-ID and residential-foreigner resource to identify the correct registration office and confirm the current charge. These are existing procedures, not a new November rule.

Obtain and maintain the actual student permission

The Department of Immigration describes the student permit as permission to enter Malawi and study at an approved educational institution. It identifies foreign nationals intending to study or conduct educational research as potential applicants. Its student-permit page directs applications with the form and supporting information to Immigration Headquarters or a regional office, with the Chief Immigration Officer deciding whether to approve or reject the application.

The same official resource says renewal applications must be submitted three months before the permit expires. Record that date from the document actually issued and request the renewal form and current supporting checklist early enough to meet it. The National Registration Bureau’s identity process does not renew an immigration permit, and a university admission letter should not be assumed to extend an existing stay. The student-permit resource is the appropriate starting point for the immigration question; the bureau handles a different registration.

Prepare the university’s supporting file and confirm the current fees

Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, a Malawian public university, publishes an institutional study-permit checklist. For its students, it lists a three-page form in duplicate, two recent passport photographs, authenticated passport and applicable visa copies, the university admission letter and a covering letter from its registry. It also identifies a medical report, police clearance from the student’s country and evidence covering tuition, maintenance and incidental costs, or scholarship certification.

The university page lists a $100 immigration processing charge and a $10 clinic medical-report charge, while also allowing a report from another recognised Malawian health institution. Those figures are presented as the university’s published instructions, not as a newly verified nationwide 2026 tariff. Confirm the currency, current amount and payment method with Immigration and the university before paying. The university lists [email protected] and [email protected] for institutional enquiries, helping students confirm which university office will prepare the required supporting letter. Keep receipts as the university instructs, and ask another institution for its own supporting letter and process rather than substituting a KUHeS-specific document.

Follow up on delays without assuming that silence grants permission

The Department of Immigration also maintains an undated permit-enquiries notice. It asks organisations and individuals who have had no response for more than four months after submitting at Immigration Headquarters or the northern or central regional offices to contact the department immediately. This resource helps identify a follow-up problem; it does not establish a standard four-month decision deadline or an automatic approval after that period.

Keep the submission date, receipt and details of the receiving office available when making an enquiry. Ask Immigration to clarify what evidence of status applies while the individual application is pending, particularly where an entry permission or previous permit is approaching expiry. No general pending-application extension was verified in the reviewed resources. The student should therefore track the immigration expiry, the three-month renewal filing requirement and the separate thirty-day resident-registration point as distinct events, using the responsible authority for each action. Include the dated application receipt when requesting a status update.
