A conference invitation does not identify every immigration route
Maldives Immigration provides a 14-day on-arrival Meeting Visa for foreign nationals attending qualifying meetings, conferences or conventions. The route has operated since 14 May 2023; this article explains its current limits rather than presenting it as a new announcement. The authority’s Meeting Visa guidance says it cannot be extended, and its holders cannot obtain a Business Visa while remaining in the Maldives.
The event must fall within the accepted business, government or otherwise authorised arrangements described in that guidance. Visitors should therefore ask the organiser to identify the event and its authorisation where relevant before choosing this route. An invitation to a conference and a plan to remain for continuing business activity raise different questions. The latter should be resolved before travelling, because the published rules do not offer an in-country conversion from a Meeting Visa.
Prepare the short-stay evidence and departure plan
The Meeting Visa checklist requires confirmed return travel, prepaid confirmed accommodation at a registered hotel, sufficient funds and the necessary permission for onward destinations. Its passport standard is a machine-readable document with at least one month of validity; passports whose validity has been extended are not accepted. These are the stated meeting-route requirements, not a substitute for an airline or transit country’s separate document checks.
For an illustrative traveller attending a four-day conference, the important planning question is whether the entire proposed visit fits the permission granted at entry. A wish to remain for additional meetings does not remove the non-extension rule. Keep the itinerary and departure arrangements consistent with the declared purpose, and inspect the actual entry record rather than assuming that every short-stay category has the same duration.
Business visits require approval before arrival
The separate Business Visa service is for approved business purposes supported by an invitation from a locally registered business or organisation. Immigration’s current page directs applications through the economic ministry’s Business Portal and requires approval before arrival. Submission generates a General Service Request number; ministry approval is followed by Immigration verification, and the approved eVisa becomes available through the portal. A submission receipt is therefore not the final permission.
This route requires a passport valid for at least six months and a compliant photograph taken within the previous three months. Immigration’s current service page states a cumulative limit of 90 days within a 12-month period. Older official material displays a different annual allowance, so repeat visitors should seek confirmation against their actual travel history rather than rely on that older figure. The reviewed current page does not provide a complete fee schedule: obtain the applicable charge through the official application process before payment. Approval remains subject to border clearance.
Employment follows a separate employer-led process
An assignment involving employment needs assessment under the Work Visa process rather than an assumption that business or meeting permission authorises it. Immigration’s Work Visa service says new workers must arrive with a valid Entry Pass issued through the responsible ministry. The employer or authorised representative must obtain the Work eVisa within 15 days of arrival, using the Xpat Online System.
The service identifies a recent compliant photograph and clear passport biodata copy among the required records, with additional documents where applicable. It also explains that old work-visa stickers ceased to be valid after 23 November 2025. Existing workers returning from abroad should check the approved digital visa and current passport number before departure and return. Work-visa validity depends on the underlying permit, so a historic sticker or an unfinished online request is insufficient evidence of current permission.
Use the free arrival declaration without confusing it with approval
The Meeting Visa page requires the electronic Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before the flight to the Maldives. Immigration’s dedicated declaration guidance confirms that the official IMUGA form is free and can be submitted personally. A third party charging to complete it is not collecting a government declaration fee.
Complete the declaration through the named official service after checking the trip details, and keep the record available for travel. This administrative step does not replace business pre-approval or the worker’s Entry Pass. Readers should finish route selection first, obtain the permission required for that activity and then complete the arrival formalities. That sequence prevents a free declaration confirmation from being mistaken for authorisation to undertake a different purpose of stay.
