Maldives tourist extensions: check the IMUGA record, recent photograph and existing permission deadline
This current guide follows the extension process introduced on 23 April 2026 and the Immigration service’s warning about paid declaration websites. It separates admission, the free arrival declaration and an application to stay longer.

Arrival permission still depends on the entry requirements
Tourists planning a longer Maldives visit should distinguish permission granted at arrival from a subsequent application to extend it. Maldives Immigration's tourist guidance says tourists do not need pre-approval for the arrival visa, but immigration officers must still determine admissibility. This is a current procedural guide, not an announcement that a new visa category opened today or that every visitor receives an automatic extension.
The tourist guidance requires a machine-readable passport or travel document with at least one month's validity and does not accept passports whose validity has merely been extended. It also requires a complete itinerary, confirmed return journey, prepaid booking at a registered facility and adequate funds, or an approved sponsorship. Children need their own passport. The page states that entry on Israeli passports has not been allowed since 15 April 2025, so the general tourist description is not an exception to that restriction.
Submit the free traveller declaration in its own advance window
The official IMUGA Traveller Declaration page says the form is required within 96 hours before the arrival flight time. Each traveller, including a child, needs a separate declaration according to Immigration's tourist instructions. The pre-arrival declaration and the decision on how long the visitor may stay are separate records. A family should check that each passport has its own completed declaration rather than assume one adult's submission covers every accompanying child.
Immigration's separate Traveller Declaration warning, updated on 17 August, says this is a free self-declaration service and no agent is required. It warns about websites or individuals charging to submit it and advises using the official IMUGA portal. The portal provides New Declaration, Edit and Verify options. Use those official functions to manage the record; paying a third-party charge does not buy a different immigration entitlement or a guaranteed admission decision.
Use the streamlined extension application rather than recreating every record
The Immigration service's Maldives 2.0 notice describes the tourist-extension procedure effective from 23 April 2026. Applicants log in to IMUGA, where passport and accommodation information already held can be retrieved instead of re-entered. They must supply a passport-size photograph taken within the previous twelve months. A passport biodata-page upload is required in specified cases, including renewal or a mismatch with existing information.
Check the retrieved details against the passport being used. An illustrative tourist who renewed a passport during the trip should resolve the changed document in the extension record rather than rely on information copied from the earlier arrival. The extension workflow concerns an existing visitor's permission; completing another arrival declaration is not a substitute for using it.
Correct the accommodation record and allow for examination time
The extension notice allows a visitor who has changed accommodation to update hotel details in the application and gives an expected 48-hour completion period. That indication does not authorise an overstay or promise a decision within two days in every case. The existing permission's expiry remains the date against which the traveller must plan.
Compare the accommodation shown in the application with the place booked for the proposed additional period, not merely the original arrival booking. Keep the extension request and the resulting decision distinct. If further information is requested, address it through the official process; a hotel payment or a submitted form does not by itself show that additional immigration permission has been granted.
Check the onward journey, relevant health evidence and unresolved fee
The UK government's entry guidance, scoped to full British-citizen passports, corroborates the one-month passport-validity requirement and directs uncertain cases to the Maldivian High Commission. It warns that a damaged, invalid or reported-lost travel document can prevent entry. Travellers should also check the requirements of their onward destination, since satisfying Maldives' minimum does not settle the passport or visa requirements for the next country. For British-citizen tourists, that guidance describes a 30-day visa on arrival. It separately requires a work visa before travel for an intended employment stay; the tourist extension should not be used to assume work rights.
Maldives Immigration requires yellow-fever evidence where the stated recent-travel risk applies and exempts children under one from that certificate requirement. For an extension charge, the streamlined-process notice does not establish a universal amount: check the official application and obtain clarification through Immigration's contact page before payment. That page identifies the visa service and call-centre hours. Keep arrival documents, the extension application and the resulting decision distinct, and remain within the conditions actually granted.
