Malta requires proof of funds for an extra month after job loss

Confirm the applicable grace period promptly

Single Permit holders in Malta should not assume that losing a job automatically provides an unconditional sixty-day stay. Identità’s July 2025 policy document describes the initial thirty-day period and its commencement from 1 August 2025; the current employment FAQ confirms that arrangement. A further thirty days may be granted if the person demonstrates financial self-sufficiency. This is a reminder of an existing arrangement, not a newly announced November extension.

The FAQ is the relevant official resource for the grace-period conditions. A worker should contact Identità before the initial period ends to establish how the individual extension request and supporting evidence should be submitted. The reviewed guidance does not supply a universal bank-balance amount or a standard document package for that extension, so those details should not be invented. Keep the termination date and the authority’s response available when planning the next application.

Ensure the former employer reports the termination

Identità’s termination instructions place separate reporting duties on the employer who obtained the permit. They require the Jobsplus termination form within four days of the termination date and notification to Identità’s Expatriates Unit within the same period. The resource identifies an online termination request, using the linked portal manual, or an email notification as the available Identità channels.

These duties concern reporting the end of the specific job; they do not transfer the worker to a new employer. The termination page states that the same permit is not valid for employment with another employer or in another designation. A residence card’s printed future expiry should therefore not be read as permission to start an unrelated job. Use the termination resource to identify the former employer’s reporting tasks and obtain confirmation that the employment end date has been recorded correctly.

Have the new employer file the correct application

The official change-of-employer page says a new employer may submit an application before the worker terminates the previous employment. It directs the process through the Expatriates Online Portal. It also says applications submitted within sixty days after termination may be considered for processing, while referring to the applicant’s immigration status in that situation as irregular.

That wording should not be treated as an unconditional sixty-day residence authorisation: the FAQ separately makes the second thirty days conditional on financial evidence. Ask Identità to confirm the individual status and filing position rather than infer permission from an application’s possible acceptance. The change-of-employer page lists EUR 600 for that application and separately lists EUR 300 for a business transfer, including mergers. These are different contexts, so an ordinary move to an unrelated employer should not use the business-transfer charge without confirmation. Retain the portal submission and payment records.

Match the new contract, housing and health evidence

The current official Single Permit change-of-employer checklist requires the generated CEA Form C3 with the applicable employer, applicant and landlord signatures, passport biography page, both sides of the residence card and a contract signed by employer and worker. The contract must state basic pay and employment duration, and the signed position description must correspond to it. The checklist also identifies the employer’s Jobsplus declaration of suitability.

Housing evidence includes the applicable lease or purchase agreement and Housing Authority approval, with separate declarations for hotel accommodation or free housing. The professional lease-attestation form is specified where the address changes. For health cover, the checklist allows either qualifying medical insurance with at least EUR 100,000 coverage for the applied period, excluding travel insurance, or the stated evidence of healthcare entitlement. It also requires the health-screening approval identified in the checklist.

Upload the documents through the portal and bring the originals to biometrics as instructed. The FAQ separately says an Approval in Principle alone does not authorise work; the residence card or applicable interim work authorisation is required. Confirm that permission before starting the new job.
