Plan for the fourteen-day medical upload after arrival
Foreign students entering Mauritius should arrange the local medical tests and NELS upload within fourteen days of arrival. The Passport and Immigration Office's guidance dated 25 August 2026 specifies that interval and says failure to upload the required reports can cause the application to be set aside.
Use a health-ministry-registered private clinic or laboratory. NELS later notifies the original-document appointment. Keep originals available after landing and arrange the local medical visit promptly.
Obtain the enrolment key and prepare the online evidence
The University of Mauritius visa page explains that the institution enrols the student on NELS and supplies the unique enrolment key. The student then uses that key for the application through the National Electronic Licensing System. Its required uploads include the passport personal-details pages, photograph, offer letter, the student's acceptance, accommodation evidence and a national-level character certificate issued less than six months earlier.
It also asks for certified bank evidence showing at least MUR150,000, plus a sponsor letter and sponsor identification where the student is not self-funded. That figure is evidence, not a visa fee. Medical reports have a six-month validity at the application stage and belong in the dedicated medical-upload section. Ask the institution for the complete test list appropriate to the student's country; the published guidance contains country-specific additional requirements rather than one identical list for everyone.
Do not rely on an older one-month medical timetable
The University of Technology, Mauritius still publishes international-student instructions requiring a local medical certificate within one month of arrival. It also describes an initial three-month entry permit followed by a student visa normally issued for at least a year, depending on the course and continued registration. These instructions show why a student should distinguish permission to travel from the later residence document, but their one-month medical interval differs from the August 2026 immigration guidance.
The consequence is practical: waiting until the fourth week could miss the fourteen-day upload interval in the newer guidance. Ask the university's international office to confirm the current NELS steps before departure and use the shorter published requirement while resolving that discrepancy. Neither the older university timetable nor an institution's offer letter establishes that a student can remain after the permission actually granted expires. Keep the entry document and the resulting residence decision with the academic enrolment records.
Check university payment conditions separately from immigration charges
UTM's downloadable international-student checklist calls for evidence of full-fee payment and says the student visa for entry is issued only after payment. It describes a refund of paid fees if Immigration does not grant the visa, excluding the application fee. These are UTM's institutional payment instructions, not a guarantee of visa approval after a bank transfer and not a universal refund policy for every Mauritian institution.
The same checklist describes sending original papers by registered post, five photographs and local medical results no later than a month after arrival. Compare those instructions with the online key-and-upload procedure and the newer medical timetable before mailing originals. Ask which paper items the institution still needs and which documents must instead be uploaded or retained for verification. No separate current immigration application charge was established from these resources. A fee invoice should identify whether it concerns admission, tuition, document handling or an immigration charge; the student should obtain that distinction before paying.
Prepare the arrival documents before flying
UoM's international-student arrival checklist asks students to keep the admission letter, accommodation evidence, medical records and provisional student permit in their hand luggage. It asks for an airport pickup request at least seven days ahead and confirmation at least three days ahead. Those are university transport arrangements, separate from immigration permission. Its short passport reminder says at least six months, while UoM's visa page requires validity covering the programme. Check the longer programme-related requirement when preparing the passport rather than treating the travel checklist's brief minimum as sufficient for every course. UoM's arrival checklist also gives one month for medical results; ask its admissions office to reconcile that with the newer fourteen-day upload requirement.
