Distinguish the extension date from the permitted stay
Myanmar's Permanent Mission in Geneva announced on 6 October 2026 that the tourist visa-on-arrival arrangement for Chinese and Indian travellers arriving by air had been extended for a third one-year trial period. The published extension runs from 30 August 2026 through 29 August 2027.
The announcement confirms continuation of an existing arrangement, rather than a newly introduced exemption for all visitors. The August 2027 date is the scheme's stated end date; it does not allow an individual traveller to remain until then. Nor does an airport arrangement establish permission to enter through a land crossing.
Use the mission's dated announcement when checking whether older official information still showing a 2025–26 trial period has been superseded. Confirm the applicable airport procedure with the relevant Myanmar mission before departure, especially where an airline is relying on an older reference page.
Prepare the documents and payment for airport processing
The tourism ministry's standing visa-on-arrival page separately describes the Chinese and Indian tourist conditions. It lists a free application form, two colour photographs measuring 1.2 by 1.5 inches and a US$50 visa charge per person. The permitted visit is up to thirty days and the stated tourist stay cannot be extended.
The passport must have at least six months' remaining validity. The page says an applicant failing that requirement will be denied entry and returned on the arriving airline. Check validity against the actual arrival date, rather than the date a reservation was made or the date the extension announcement appeared.
This page retains the previous trial-period introduction, so read its operational checklist alongside the later Geneva extension notice. It also preserves immigration and security screening and excludes restricted areas from ordinary tourist access. Receiving a tourist visa does not remove those controls or provide permission for employment, business activity or entry to every destination within Myanmar.
Check the passport actually being used for the journey
The UK government's Myanmar entry guidance is explicitly written for travellers on a full British-citizen passport. It says those travellers must obtain their visa before departure and cannot use visa on arrival. The Chinese and Indian extension should therefore not be presented as a nationality-neutral airport service.
That guidance identifies online tourist e-visa applications as a separate route. A reader travelling on a different passport should ask the relevant Myanmar mission which route applies, rather than infer eligibility from residence in China or India or from travelling with an eligible companion. The passport used for the trip is a material part of the check.
The same UK page warns that overstaying can lead to fines and detention. It also requires a yellow-fever vaccination certificate when arriving from a country listed as a transmission risk. Review the whole itinerary and current medical-entry requirements; the visa-extension announcement does not itself waive health documentation or resolve an individual's overstaying position.
Assess travel restrictions separately from visa availability
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's current Myanmar warning provides a separate risk assessment. It advises against all travel to several states and regions, including Chin, Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Mon and Rakhine, and against all but essential travel to additional areas. Its regional map helps readers locate the intended destination rather than rely on a countrywide assumption.
The warning also says the conflict is increasingly volatile, conditions may deteriorate at short notice and the authorities can introduce travel restrictions at any time. An available visa route is therefore not evidence that a proposed journey is safe or that a planned internal route will remain open.
Readers should compare the destination and transit arrangements with their own government's current advice and check insurance against the itinerary and planned activities. The UK specifically warns that travelling against its advice can invalidate insurance. Resolve those questions before purchasing non-refundable travel, keeping the dated extension notice, passport documents and confirmed airport instructions together for the entry check.
