The earlier ETA transition no longer covers current journeys

Nauru passport holders planning a British visit or connection should check the visa route before booking. The UK introduced a visitor-visa requirement from 3pm GMT on 9 December 2025 and removed Nauru from the eligible ETA nationality list. This report checks the current consequences on 29 October 2026; it is not a new announcement of that earlier decision.

The published Statement of Changes limited the temporary concession to qualifying bookings and ETAs held by the introduction time, with arrival no later than 3pm GMT on 20 January 2026. That historical transition cannot support an October journey. An ETA issued during the former arrangements should not be assumed to replace the visa now required.

The current carrier guidance lists the country as Naoero among nationalities requiring visas to enter or transit, subject to applicable exceptions. Check the passport category against that official guidance rather than searching only an older country-name list or relying on a past successful trip.

Ask whether the connection requires crossing the UK border

The Direct Airside Transit visa guidance applies where the passenger changes flights without going through British border control. It lists a GBP 41.50 fee, which may vary slightly according to the application country. Airside transit is an immigration category, not simply a description of spending a short time at an airport.

The separate Visitor in Transit guidance covers a connection requiring border control, such as collecting and checking baggage again, where departure is within forty-eight hours and the person is not working or studying. Its published fee is GBP 74.50. A longer stay normally requires the Standard Visitor route.

For illustration, two passengers with the same final destination can need different permissions if one remains airside and the other must collect luggage or change airports. Confirm the actual connection arrangements with the airline before choosing the application. A short scheduled layover does not prove the passenger can remain airside.

Check an existing permission or document-based exception

The transit guidance identifies cases where a separate transit visa is unnecessary, including holders of a valid Standard Visitor visa, Marriage Visitor visa, qualifying Home Office travel document or EU Settlement Scheme family permit. The carrier guidance provides further detailed airside and landside exceptions based on documents and journey conditions.

Do not assume that a visa or residence card for any foreign country automatically qualifies. Use the exact exception and check its validity, issuing country and itinerary conditions. A reference to ETA holders in general transit guidance does not restore ETA eligibility to a Nauru passport holder after the nationality change.

Journeys through Britain to Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man have separate visitor-visa considerations in the transit guidance. Check that section if the connecting destination is inside the Common Travel Area rather than assuming it is treated like an onward flight to any other country.

Prepare the onward-country evidence and the appointment

The official transit application page requires a current passport or valid travel document. If the passenger is not a national of the destination country, evidence of permission to enter can include a valid visa or residence permit. It may also require an explanation of the trip and accommodation, together with confirmed onward travel.

Apply online and arrange the required visa-centre appointment for fingerprints and a photograph. The page warns that the nearest centre may be in another country. It gives a usual decision period of three weeks, rather than an assurance that every application will be completed before a particular flight.

Keep the onward booking and destination permission available during travel, not merely uploaded with the application. The evidence supports the declared transit purpose and can still matter when the airline or border authority checks the journey.

Use the visitor route for a visit rather than a qualifying connection

The Standard Visitor application page lists GBP 135 for permission covering a visit of up to six months. It allows applications from three months before travel and requires an online form and visa-centre appointment. Each family member must apply separately and pay the applicable fee.

Choose the route matching the real activity and stay. A transit permission should not be treated as a cheaper substitute for a holiday, and a paid application is not a visa grant. Before departure, identify the granted permission, the authorised journey and any conditions attached to the decision.
