Match the visit to the permitted activities

Travellers planning a visit to Nauru should check the activities their visa permits before accepting work, conducting professional business or arranging media coverage. The Department of Justice and Border Control publishes separate visitor, business and employment visa categories. A short trip does not by itself make every proposed activity suitable for a visitor visa.

The official visitor form prohibits activity for which a business or employment visa may be granted. It also prohibits religious activity beyond normal religious observance. This is continuing procedural guidance, not a newly announced November restriction. Describe the actual activity clearly when seeking the appropriate visa rather than relying only on the trip's duration.

The form requires English answers and certified English translations where supporting documents use another language. Its checklist includes certified passport identity pages, a named passport photograph, a police certificate covering the relevant residence jurisdictions and a medical-fitness certificate. It says not to supply originals unless requested. Keep a complete copy of the submitted file.

Check the visitor fee and the expiry date

The Immigration Division's fee table lists visitor charges of fifty dollars for up to one month, one hundred and fifty dollars for up to two months and two hundred and fifty dollars for up to three months. Ask the receiving office to confirm the payment assessment and any claimed exemption for the particular passport.

Use the Immigration Division's application-form links and Yaren office details to resolve category and payment questions. Its business and other charges are separate; do not apply one category's tariff to another.

The same page warns that overstayers face a daily fifty-dollar charge. Its seven-day notice process requires payment and a new visa application to regularise presence, with prosecution and removal possible for failure to comply. That enforcement notice is not an extra seven days of ordinary visitor permission. Check the actual visa expiry and arrange the next action before it passes.

Obtain specific approval for media work

Nauru's government visa-requirements page gives separate instructions for visiting media personnel. It directs an entry request to Immigration and lists a completed application, a scanned passport details page and an employer's letter explaining the reason for travel. Media applications carry an AUD8,000 charge, which the page identifies as non-refundable if unsuccessful.

That large amount is specifically a media-application fee, not the ordinary visitor charge. Someone planning journalism, filming or other media activity should resolve the category directly rather than arrive on the assumption that a visitor visa covers the assignment.

The government page also says airport officials take passports for office processing and return them later that day or the next morning. Confirm the current handling arrangements and retain copies of identity and approval records. An application or payment receipt should not be assumed to establish that permission has already been granted. Use the government's listed Immigration contact to clarify those arrangements for a scheduled arrival rather than assume a travel agent can waive official processing.

Check travel-document validity against the actual journey

Canada's Nauru advice separately says a regular Canadian passport must remain valid for at least three months beyond entry. It cautions that a carrier's validity rules may be stricter and that temporary passports or emergency documents may be treated differently. Confirm the document to be used before making a booking. Its advice also recommends checking entry information with the destination's foreign representative because requirements may change.

The Canadian guidance also says tourist, business and student visas are required for its travellers, and that business visitors must demonstrate a local sponsor. Officials may request an onward or return ticket and sufficient funds. Those passport-specific instructions should not be converted into an unverified nationality-wide exemption list.

For a traveller using a Canadian document with an X gender identifier, the page recommends checking recognition with the destination's representative and notes that travel systems may handle the identifier differently. Resolve that question, any transit-document requirements and the required visa before departure, keeping the confirmed permission and supporting itinerary accessible for the journey.
