Nepal’s passport portal change does not remove in-person checks

A current guide explains the new application link, local appointment and payment rules, and the documents families need when applying abroad.

Use the current link and check the mission’s instructions

Nepal’s newer passport portal still leads to in-person identity and biometric procedures. The consulate in Dubai announced its move to the new system on 13 July 2026 and linked online.nepalpassport.gov.np. This is a current guide to preparing an application, rather than a new November launch.

The July notice warned of technical issues during the initial transition and temporarily prioritised urgent cases, such as lost or expiring passports and newborns. That warning described the rollout period; it should not be treated as proof that the same temporary restriction still applies to every November applicant. Use the mission’s current passport instructions for the actual appointment and contact arrangements. Completing the online form does not itself produce a passport or remove the requirement to attend when instructed.

London applicants need to plan for processing and attendance

The Nepalese embassy in London currently advises allowing nine to twelve weeks during the system transition. Its checklist requires the printed application, passport and citizenship evidence, with marriage or divorce records where a surname has changed. Applicants must attend on the booked date for biometrics. The published renewal charge is GBP110; replacement after loss, theft or damage is GBP220, with card payment at the visit rather than online payment.

The embassy separately describes child applications and different fees for those under ten. Use the age-specific checklist instead of treating every family member as an adult renewal. Its collection instructions require waiting for notification that the document has reached the embassy. A production or application reference alone does not establish that it is ready in London. Applicants facing a visa renewal should plan around both their immigration document and the passport-processing period.

Do not use a domestic payment route for the wrong service

The Department of Passports’ online-payment page limits that facility to its expedited service. It expressly tells applicants using regular service through a District Administration Office not to pay through that route. This is a distinct instruction from an overseas mission’s local card or counter-payment arrangements.

The department requires a completed pre-enrolment form before payment, with a reference or barcode used to retrieve the details. Its procedure generates the revenue request through the payment system and requires two printed copies of the paid voucher for the enrolment station. Keep those records with the supporting documents. The page warns that revenue payments cannot be reversed or refunded and that payment-operator charges can be additional. Confirm the correct service and amount before paying; a visible government payment screen is not evidence that it is the appropriate route for every applicant overseas.

Children approaching sixteen need a citizenship-document plan

Section 10 of Nepal’s Passport Act requires the prescribed identity evidence and addresses applications for children under sixteen through a parent or guardian. The law’s special-condition provision covers a different situation: a child of a Nepali citizen living abroad who reaches sixteen without the Nepali citizenship certificate.

Section 20 allows a one-time passport of up to two years where the required evidence shows that foreign citizenship has neither been acquired nor applied for. It also describes a possible further period in force-majeure circumstances. This is a conditional legal mechanism, not an automatic entitlement for every teenager abroad. The holder must obtain the citizenship certificate within the applicable period. Families should ask the mission which evidence and current procedure apply before an ordinary passport expires, rather than discover at renewal that an older child needs a different document.

Identify an outdated link before following a local checklist

The consulate in Jeddah’s passport page remains useful for identifying local renewal and child-document categories, but its application link still points to the older emrtds system. London and Dubai now identify the newer portal. Applicants should confirm the current link with the competent mission instead of assuming that every old instruction has been updated simultaneously.

The Jeddah checklist requests a printed form, old passport and citizenship evidence for renewal, with additional birth and parental records for children. Its Saudi-riyal charges and local arrangements are not London’s charges. Use the post serving the applicant’s residence and retain the submission and payment records. No common November closing date appears in these resources; the practical deadlines are the appointment, existing passport and immigration expiries, and any citizenship-document requirement applying to the child.
