Check the student-visa deadline as well as the opening date
International graduates considering New Zealand’s new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa should compare the launch date with their student-visa expiry. Immigration New Zealand’s announcement says applications open on 16 November 2026 through Enhanced Immigration Online. Applications must be made within three months of the relevant student visa ending. A person whose student visa expired before 16 August would therefore be outside that window when the route opens.
The announcement describes six months of open work rights for eligible graduates who do not qualify for a Post-Study Work Visa. It does not offer a second short-term grant or an extension. Any work must be for an employer under an employment agreement or contract for services; business ownership is excluded. Plan around a limited transition period.
Check the short-term qualification conditions before choosing the route
INZ’s separate New and Updated Post-Study Work Visa Options notice requires a qualification at New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework levels five to seven, studied full-time in New Zealand for at least twenty-four weeks. English-language, foundation and bridging qualifications are excluded. A person previously granted either a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa or a Post-Study Work Visa cannot obtain this new short-term permission. The product page additionally excludes micro-credentials.
The options notice also broadens the longer Post-Study Work Visa from 16 November for certain level-seven graduate diploma holders who have a bachelor’s degree, whether earned in New Zealand or overseas. It requires the full diploma study and enrolment period, without cross-crediting or recognised prior learning. Degree and transcript evidence matter. Compare both routes before assuming that a graduate diploma belongs in the short-term category: the short-term route expressly excludes qualifications that establish eligibility for the longer one. No individual qualification assessment has been obtained for this guide.
Prepare completion evidence and accessible living funds
The visa’s product page remains marked closed until the launch. Its checklist asks for qualification evidence, a passport copy, an acceptable photograph and any required police certificates. Completion can be demonstrated with the qualification certificate, academic transcript or a tertiary-provider letter confirming completion or eligibility to graduate. The page says an application will not be approved where the qualification recorded on the student visa was not completed.
Applicants must demonstrate access to at least NZD 5,000, for example with a recent bank statement showing their name and account balance; a screenshot is not accepted. No numerical application fee was verified in the reviewed material. The passport must normally remain valid for at least three months after planned departure. The product page also says applicants in New Zealand must remain on a valid visa throughout: the three-month application window is not permission to overstay an expired student visa.
Check whether the qualification belongs in the longer post-study route
The separate Post-Study Work qualification resource is important because eligibility for that route excludes the new short-term option. It describes degree-level seven qualifications and level eight-to-ten study with the required New Zealand full-time study period. Certain non-degree level four-to-seven qualifications can qualify where the full duration was completed and the qualification appears on the official eligible list.
The list attaches specific knowledge or professional conditions to some qualifications. For example, its engineering diploma entries distinguish civil, electrical, electronics and mechanical strands; teaching entries include Teaching Council requirements. Similar qualification names do not necessarily establish the same outcome. Use the actual award, level, credits and relevant professional evidence when checking the list. Recheck the criteria applying on the intended application date, including announced post-study changes, rather than assuming that a qualification outside yesterday’s list must fall within the new route. No individual award has been assessed for this guide.
Plan accompanying family applications separately
The Bringing Family resource says support rights depend on the particular work visa, not just the fact that someone is allowed to work. It specifically limits support for a partner’s work visa where the principal worker’s visa is six months or less, subject to the stated exploitation-protection exception. Family permission usually expires alongside the principal worker’s visa. The product page excludes relationship-based partner work and dependent-child student visas, while allowing visitor-visa support.
The general resource also makes clear that family members can investigate visas in their own right where support is unavailable. Do not transfer conditions from a longer work category to a six-month graduate visa. Check the visa conditions and the separate partner or child application before arranging work or schooling. The general family page is a comparison resource, not a finding that a particular relationship or child meets every requirement. Each person needs the appropriate permission; the graduate’s own application is not a family visa application.
