Check the NIN record before submitting the passport request
Nigerians changing their passport name after marriage should check the National Identification Number record before paying for a passport request. The Nigeria Immigration Service’s renewal instructions verify the NIN and compare current passport details against NIMC data. They tell applicants that the personal information displayed comes from that identity record. A marriage certificate does not itself demonstrate that the digital record has already changed.
The renewal workflow then asks for processing centre, booklet size, compliant photograph, contact address, next of kin and supporting records before review, payment and biometric appointment. Use it to understand why inconsistent identity details need attention; a routine renewal should not be assumed to carry out a separate name amendment automatically. Compare the displayed spelling and order of names with the intended change before submission, and retain a usable email address for communications about the request.
Prepare the NIMC change-of-name evidence separately
NIMC’s self-service modification guidance lists a court affidavit, newspaper extract, another government identity document and, where the change concerns marital status, a marriage certificate. Its online service covers name, telephone, birth-date and address modifications, but these are different requests with different evidence. A name change should not be used to make unrelated changes to a birth date without the required separate documentation.
Collect legible records supporting the precise name requested and keep the modification transaction reference. Ask NIMC how to resolve a discrepancy if its record does not yet reflect an approved change before continuing with the passport file. The official page describes approval and a resulting NIN slip in its modification workflow, so submission should not be confused with the completed identity update. This report has not verified an individual modification outcome or a current name-modification charge; confirm the assessed payment on the official service.
Use the passport change-of-data category for marital changes
The NIS passport guidance has a distinct change-of-data category for a change in marital status. Its uploads include an NPC birth certificate or High Court age declaration, state-of-origin certificate, an application letter, marriage certificate, court affidavit, newspaper publication and the current passport’s data page. An applicant should therefore prepare the full category file rather than relying on the marriage document alone.
The service says to complete the passport application online and attend the chosen passport office with payment and appointment slips. Applicants abroad are directed to the nearest Nigerian embassy, high commission or consulate. Physical attendance with the current booklet is required for photograph and biometric capture under the published change procedure. Keep the existing passport available for that appointment and obtain the mission’s local submission instructions if applying abroad; domestic appointment arrangements should not be assumed to apply identically at every overseas post.
Separate the administrative correction charge from the booklet price
The NIS 2026 service-level agreement lists a 30,000-naira correction-of-data administrative charge alongside the passport booklet prices. It gives 100,000 naira or US$150 for a 32-page five-year booklet and 200,000 naira or US$230 for a 64-page ten-year booklet, excluding bank charges. These published components should be checked against the application’s assessed invoice; the administrative amount alone is not the full price of a newly issued booklet.
The agreement’s correction section describes 21 days after successful enrolment with the qualification “IF NLO”, while another general passport row describes 42 days for fresh applications or changes of data. The abbreviation is not expanded in the reviewed table. Ask NIS which service standard applies to the actual case rather than promising travel on either figure. Neither period starts merely when a person gathers documents or opens an online form, and no individual booklet-production date was confirmed.
Avoid losing access to the identity-modification account
NIMC’s public advisory says its self-service modification account is tied to the browser and device used at registration. It instructs users to log in through that same combination and warns that clearing browser cache can reset access and require an unlinking process. Plan the identity update on a device that will remain available while the request is being handled.
The advisory also describes a maximum of five unlock-attempt requests after a browser or device is locked, and gives [email protected] for assistance. If access fails, use the official support route rather than repeatedly creating new accounts or assuming a fresh passport payment solves the identity-system problem. Keep the NIMC reference and the separate NIS application reference distinguishable when seeking help. An identity-record amendment and passport issue remain different administrative decisions, even when both are needed for the same married-name change.
