Nigeria’s student visa requires the institution to accept immigration responsibility

International students seeking Nigeria’s R7A visa need more than an admission offer. Official guidance separates the institution’s immigration undertaking, tuition and funding evidence, embassy enrolment and the residence permission obtained through regularisation.

Obtain the institution’s immigration undertaking

International students applying for Nigeria's R7A student visa should obtain the educational institution's acceptance of immigration responsibility as well as its admission letter. The Nigeria Immigration Service lists both documents, together with evidence of minimum tuition payment and funds or sponsorship. An ordinary offer of a place is not the full immigration file.

The NIS category page describes the visa as valid for ninety days from issue, with a two-year renewable permit upon regularisation. Those are different stages. A prospective student should confirm the required residence follow-up rather than assume a visa sticker alone authorises the entire course.

NIS describes employment as subject to approval, without an unrestricted student work right or weekly allowance. Check proposed work separately.

Follow the published application and enrolment sequence

The NIS Service Level Agreement's R7A entry provides the operational sequence: apply through the regular visa portal, upload the required documents, pay the visa charges and attend the embassy for interview and biometric enrolment. The institution makes a formal R7A application accepting immigration responsibility on the applicant's behalf.

Its document list includes a passport valid for at least six months with two blank pages, a recent photograph and acceptance from an accredited Nigerian educational institution. The agreement sets a ten-day service target from enrolment, meaning interview and biometric capture. It should not be counted from the day a student first asks a university for admission.

The agreement is the 2025 edition, available on the NIS website; its upload path does not make it a new March 2026 policy announcement. Check the receiving mission's current appointment instructions and fee assessment. The service target is not permission to travel before a decision or a guarantee that an incomplete application will be issued on time.

Check the receiving mission’s identity and biometric requirements

Nigeria's consulate in Atlanta publishes general requirements that applicants using that jurisdiction should compare with the R7A checklist. It requires two blank visa pages, specified recent photographs and a correctly completed English application. For a minor, the person exercising parental authority or the legal guardian signs, and the parental authorisation must be notarised.

The Atlanta page says fingerprints are collected following successful submission at an approved visa application centre, with diplomats exempt from biometric enrolment. It also says an applicant may be called for an interview regardless of whether the application was lodged at the consulate or a centre. Arrange availability accordingly instead of assuming document submission ends the process.

Its photograph instructions include a white background, a neutral expression and photographs reflecting current appearance. Use the mission's published specifications for that filing route; do not copy dimensions or appointment arrangements from a different consulate without checking. A course start date does not excuse a missing identity or enrolment requirement.

Keep payment records and local supporting documents together

Nigeria's embassy in Moscow separately lists the visa payment receipt among its general requirements, alongside the application, passport information, photographs, yellow-fever certificate and travel arrangements. Readers applying there should use its instructions to establish which local supporting documents are required in addition to the student-category evidence.

That mission also requests travel history for the previous five years and information about parents, next of kin, professional experience and Nigerian associates or sponsors. Prepare consistent factual details rather than leave the additional information until an appointment. These are Moscow's published supporting requirements, not a claim that every mission uses an identical supplementary form.

Keep the institution's undertaking, tuition evidence and current passport details together with the payment confirmation and application reference. Obtain the current nationality-specific visa charge through the official filing route; the pages reviewed do not support one universal R7A fee for all passports. Before departure, ask the institution and NIS which residence document and deadline will apply after arrival, and preserve the written instructions for that follow-up.
