North Macedonian workers should obtain German job approval before booking a visa appointment
Germany’s Western Balkans route allows eligible North Macedonian nationals to work without a recognised qualification in many occupations. Employer approval, the correct Skopje application channel and the national visa remain separate steps.

Identify whether the Western Balkans route fits the job
North Macedonian nationals with a German job offer can consider the Western Balkans Regulation, which provides access to employment without requiring a recognised professional qualification in many occupations. Germany's official Make it in Germany portal includes North Macedonia among the six eligible Western Balkan nationalities. Residence in the region without the qualifying nationality is not the same eligibility basis.
The portal explains that the Federal Employment Agency must approve the employment and assess whether conditions are comparable to those for German employees. That approval is needed for the entry-visa application and the later residence title. An employment contract alone does not complete the immigration process.
The route cannot be used for a posting to Germany. Identify the actual employer and employment relationship before choosing it; this is continuing guidance.
Ask the employer to obtain pre-approval and check quota conditions
The Federal Employment Agency's Western Balkans page directs employers to seek pre-approval before the worker applies for the visa. Its eligibility conditions include a contract or binding offer, comparable employment conditions and pay sufficient to cover living costs. The worker must not have received benefits under Germany's Asylum Seekers Benefits Act during the previous twenty-four months.
The annual ceiling is fifty thousand approvals across the route, divided into monthly nationality allocations. A short processing position for one nationality does not remove that allocation system or guarantee a visa. The page's country-specific queue information is dated 14 October 2026 and should not be represented as a live November promise.
For a first approval involving a worker over forty-five, the agency lists a 2026 gross annual salary of EUR55,770 or evidence of adequate retirement provision. Regulated professions still require recognition. Workers extending an existing Western Balkans residence title in Germany use the foreigners authority; the pre-approval procedure is not the renewal channel.
Use Skopje’s published document and payment instructions
The German embassy in Skopje says the worker can use the personal customer number on the employer's pre-approval to arrange the visa appointment through its official external provider, VisaMetric. It says the embassy does not allocate special appointments separately. Questions about the employment pre-approval belong with the Employment Agency rather than the embassy.
The embassy lists a seventy-five-euro visa charge and a thirty-seven-euro-fifty service charge, paid in local currency. Confirm the current denar amount through its linked payment instructions. Optional copying, photographs or passport-delivery services are separate from those charges and do not establish a right to a visa.
Its checklist includes the printed application and QR code, signed declarations, employment contract, passport, biometric photograph, Employment Agency employment declaration and pre-approval. The passport needs two blank pages and validity extending at least three months beyond the visa. Some driving jobs also require licence and employer vehicle-use evidence. Check the complete checklist for the individual role before attending.
Avoid the wrong appointment category and preserve the next step
The Foreign Office's Skopje appointment system expressly excludes Western Balkans applications from its ordinary other-purpose employment booking category. It warns that choosing an incorrect category can lead to rejection at the appointment counter. Use the embassy's Western Balkans instructions rather than reserve any apparently available employment slot.
That appointment-system page also distinguishes students, qualified employment and EU Blue Card applicants using the Consular Services Portal. These are separate pathways, not interchangeable booking options for the same visa. Check which category the proposed application actually meets before entering personal details. The system also asks applicants to enter their email accurately, because the registered address cannot later be changed.
The system says its own appointment booking, forms and checklists are free and that intermediaries have no preferential access. That statement should not be confused with the separately disclosed VisaMetric service charge. Keep the pre-approval number, appointment confirmation, complete documents and payment instructions together. Obtain the actual visa decision before relying on a proposed travel or employment start date.
