Fourteen days is a specific permission

Oman visitors relying on the short-stay visa exemption should plan departure within 14 days: the Foreign Ministry says that permission cannot be extended or converted into a residence visa. This current guide, checked on 29 October 2026, explains the existing rule rather than reporting a newly announced change. A traveller expecting a longer holiday, employment or residence should establish the appropriate visa route before relying on a short exempt entry.

The ministry requires a passport valid for at least six months, a return ticket, confirmed hotel reservation, health insurance and sufficient money for the visit. Those conditions still matter when no advance visa is required. Use the ministry Entry Visas resource as the document checklist, then compare the itinerary with the actual permission; the absence of an application fee does not remove the border-document checks.

Nationality lists have different conditions

The Royal Oman Police exemption page divides eligible passports into two groups. The first includes examples such as Australia, Canada, China, Japan, the United Kingdom and United States. Its second list concerns nationals holding a valid visa from the United States, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, Japan or a Schengen country. Use the police list to find the actual nationality rather than assume that all passports receive the same conditions.

The Foreign Ministry fuller explanation says second-group nationals can qualify through residence or a valid entry visa in the specified countries, or through qualifying GCC residence and profession. Citizens of GCC states themselves do not require visas. These are different bases of eligibility: citizenship of a Gulf state, residence in one, and holding a qualifying third-country visa should not be treated as interchangeable documents.

For illustration, an Indian passport holder living in a Gulf country should check the applicable residence and profession conditions, while a British passport holder should check the nationality exemption and supporting travel evidence. Neither traveller should copy the other application answers. This comparison does not decide whether any individual residence card, occupation or supporting visa satisfies the police system; uncertain cases should be clarified before travel.

GCC-resident visas are a separate application route

The Royal Oman Police eVisa FAQ identifies category 29A for a GCC-resident principal traveller in an approved profession and 29B for the accompanying traveller. It also identifies unsponsored and sponsored tourist visa options. The right choice depends on the actual route offered for the passport and circumstances, rather than a generic claim that a Gulf residence card always provides entry without further checks.

The FAQ recommends applying at least four days ahead because processing varies. It distinguishes the period for using an issued visa from the visit itself: an unsponsored visa is valid for use for one month, while a sponsored tourist visa has a three-month use period. Do not read those windows as automatic permission to stay for one or three months. Inspect the approved visa for its permitted stay, entries and expiry before boarding.

Longer British visits need a visa

UK government entry guidance confirms the 14-day exemption for British citizen passport holders and directs those staying longer, or travelling for work or study, to obtain a visa. For tourists it identifies the unsponsored visit-visa option and recommends applying online before travel to reduce refusal risk. That guidance is for its stated British passport audience and should not be generalized to every nationality.

The same resource warns that overstaying or failing to extend a visa or residence permission can result in fines and detention, with fines up to OMR10 per day and a maximum OMR500. An existing visa extension process should not be confused with the ministry express prohibition on extending the 14-day exempt stay. A change of plans therefore needs attention while lawful permission remains valid, rather than after a missed flight.

Confirm the payable category before submitting

This review does not establish a single visa fee applicable to every passport and duration. Select the route in the official police service, check the displayed conditions and fee, and retain the approval. Before departure, make three separate checks: eligibility for the intended entry route, possession of the required documents, and a departure date within the actual stay. That sequence lets a traveller identify the next action without assuming that a short exemption can later become residence.
