Check your existing permission before requesting extra time
Visitors already in Palau on an ordinary tourist visa who need a longer holiday should start with the expiry date recorded in their passport. The Bureau of Customs and Border Protection's Immigration page says the usual thirty-day tourist permission can be extended for two further thirty-day periods, with an application at least seven days before the current visa expires. This current-rule guide concerns that application, not a new concession announced in November.
The published renewal charge is US$50. Use the Immigration resource for the deadline and fee, and the separate Visa Extension Application for the information needed to explain your request. Neither a changed airline booking nor payment to a hotel is an immigration extension. Prepare the request before changing arrangements on the assumption that another month will be granted. The public material does not establish that lodging an application automatically preserves lawful stay while a decision is pending.
Give a specific reason and support the proposed departure date
The bureau's downloadable extension form asks for identity, nationality, passport particulars, an address in Palau and local contact details. It must be typed or completed in block letters. Its instruction on reasons is unusually practical: applicants must explain the circumstances in detail; simply describing the purpose as tourism is not sufficient. Explain what requires additional time and ensure the dates agree with the supporting itinerary.
The form also requires evidence of adequate financial support and onward travel showing a departure date. Its instruction says that obtaining a full thirty-day extension requires departure at least thirty days after the current visa expires. This is a documentary condition, not a promise that the whole period will be approved. As an illustrative example, a traveller asking for an extra month while presenting a ticket only ten days after expiry should resolve that inconsistency before submitting the request. Do not alter evidence or treat the example as an individual eligibility decision.
Separate ordinary tourists from visitors admitted under pre-clearance
The bureau's official flagged-country advisory, effective 30 March 2026, must be read alongside its general tourist information. It covers designated nationalities and states that entry is limited to the return-ticket date, up to thirty days. Its extension provision requires approval through a formal visa or permit process. Visitors who entered through that procedure should ask Immigration which application category applies to their present admission rather than assume the ordinary tourist paragraph overrides their conditions.
The advisory lists Bangladesh, Cambodia, Cameroon, Ghana, Haiti, Iran, Myanmar, Nigeria, North Korea, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Sri Lanka and Vanuatu. It also addresses invited and diplomatic travel. That document concerns screening before travel as well as the subsequent stay limit; a person already admitted cannot use a new arrival-form submission as an extension application. The important question for the bureau is whether the existing admission can be extended using the standard form or requires another formal permit. No direct official clarification of that category-specific question was obtained for this article.
Compare visa waivers and confirm where to submit
Palau's honorary consulate-general in Belgium describes a ninety-day visa waiver for eligible European travellers and specifically excludes Ireland and the United Kingdom from that programme. Its general statement that visas are unnecessary should therefore be read with the nationality-specific explanation, not as a universal exemption. A person admitted under a waiver should establish their actual permitted period before paying for an ordinary tourist renewal; the thirty-day tourist procedure is not automatically the correct route for every passport.
The consulate resource directs extended-stay questions to the Bureau of Immigration on +680 488 2498 or 2678. The extension form provides [email protected] and the same telephone numbers. Confirm the current receiving office, acceptable financial evidence and payment method with that authority. Published opening hours differ between the consulate and bureau pages, so verify arrangements before travelling to the office. Bring the passport, completed form, detailed explanation, funds evidence and onward itinerary, and retain the decision and payment record. If permission is nearing expiry without a decision, ask Immigration expressly about the lawful departure deadline; these sources establish no general grace period.
