Apply before your authorised visit expires

Foreign visitors in Paraguay who want extra time without settling in the country should check the temporary-stay extension procedure before their existing admission expires. This current-rule guide concerns tourists and other people in a transitory category, not renewal of a residence card. The National Migration Directorate's procedure covers tourists, transit passengers, border-area transit, medical-treatment visitors and crew members.

Articles 42 and 43 of Migration Law 6984 distinguish the maximum possible permission from the individual period actually granted. Transitory admission can be up to ninety calendar days, with one extension no longer than the earlier period at the directorate's discretion. An application to extend or change category must be made effective before the existing period expires. A traveller admitted for thirty days should therefore not calculate the filing deadline from an assumed ninety-day entitlement. Read the entry record and ask the directorate to resolve a missing or unclear expiry before making further bookings.

Prepare identity, entry and visa evidence

The directorate's extension checklist requires the original and an authenticated copy of a valid identity document from the country of origin. It lists identity cards, national identity documents and passports as alternatives. It also requires evidence of entry issued at a migration control point: either the stamped entry slip or the passport's entry stamp. Where a consular visa is required, provide that document and the stated Foreign Ministry verification, again with the required original and authenticated copy.

The procedure page says an application can be made in person or online through the national government portal. Use its link to the actual service rather than treating a payment alone as the application. The general description says the extension concerns additional stay after the originally granted period; that description does not override the law's requirement to act before expiry. The practical sequence is to assemble the documents, select the official submission route and obtain evidence that the request has been properly filed before the present permission ends.

Use the July fee table rather than an older checklist price

The directorate's current tariff page states that its scale applies from 1 July 2026 under Decree 6225/2026 and Resolution 478/2026. The ordinary stay-extension charge is Gs585,385 for cash payment. It lists Gs598,263 for a national or international debit card, Gs601,483 for a national credit card and Gs604,703 for an international credit card. The online extension table uses the electronic-payment amounts, so a visitor comparing routes should compare the final charge rather than only the base tariff.

The government's Agencia IP report of 1 July independently identifies the new Gs585,385 stay-extension charge and explains the salary-linked tariff adjustment. It distinguishes that service from extending temporary residence, which costs Gs1,287,847 in cash. The same report identifies a Gs702,462 cash fine for an expired transitory stay or lack of an entry record. A fine is not the extension price and paying one should not be treated as advance permission to overstay. Retain the official payment receipt and check any additional transaction charges before authorising payment.

Families should clarify the residence wording in the child checklist

The extension page and downloadable checklist contain child-specific instructions that repeatedly refer to residence applications and parental residence. They describe signatures, parental identity documents, birth evidence and different arrangements where one parent is absent or a third person is responsible. This wording creates an important scope question for a family seeking only a short visitor extension: the public material does not clearly explain how every residence-related condition applies to that temporary request.

Do not ignore those conditions or assume that a tourism application automatically requires a parent to settle permanently. Ask the directorate which child checklist applies to the family's actual admission and what consent or court evidence is required. Its published contact is [email protected] or +595 21 411 2000. No direct clarification was obtained for this guide. Adults should identify their own expiry, authenticate the required evidence, confirm the applicable charge and keep filing and decision records. The reviewed resources do not establish a general processing guarantee or automatic additional lawful stay while an unresolved request is pending.
