Identify the residence deadline as well as the card expiry
Foreign residents in Peru should check two separate expiry dates before assuming that an unexpired identity card proves continuing permission to reside. Migraciones explained this distinction in its 24 February 2026 card-validity notice. This is a current procedural guide, rather than an announcement of a new October immigration concession. The issue affects existing residents across nationalities according to their immigration category; it is not a new tourist admission route.
The notice explains that ordinary resident cards generally last four years, permanent-resident cards five years and cards for children and adolescents three years. Residence itself can have a shorter validity. The card includes a QR code through which holders can check their immigration category and its expiry. Permanent residents do not need a residence extension, but must still renew the physical card when required.
Choose the extension matching your immigration category
Migraciones publishes a residence-extension directory covering workers, researchers, religious residents, investors, resident family members, special residents, students and designated workers. Use that directory to select the procedure corresponding to the status actually granted. It describes a renewable 365-day authorisation and directs applicants to act 30 days before expiry. Category-specific guidance remains essential because requirements differ.
For illustration, a worker whose card remains valid for several years may nevertheless reach the expiry of the current residence authorisation much sooner. The later card date does not remove the earlier extension task. Conversely, a permanent resident approaching card expiry should select card renewal rather than assume an annual worker extension is required.
Worker extensions require employment and income evidence
The worker-residence extension page requires the applicant to be in Peru and apply personally. Its checklist includes a form, payment receipt and declaration concerning criminal, police and judicial records. Dependent employees must provide the applicable employment contract or administrative employment decision, three recent payslips, and SUNAT income, contribution and withholding records for the last three months. The contracting party must be active and have the required SUNAT registration status.
Independent workers instead need a current service contract stating its duration and three recent professional-fee receipts demonstrating their support. The page lists S/20.20 under payment code 07566 at Banco de la Nacion. After payment, select residence extension in the digital agency and upload the requested PDFs. Retain the downloaded form and case credentials, and monitor the electronic mailbox for observations and the result. The published five-working-day service indication should not be treated as a guarantee that an incomplete case will be approved.
Renewing the card is a different paid application
The separate card-renewal procedure requires valid residence. Its requirements include the free application form and payment details; if the passport or travel-document number has changed, provide the specified copy. The holder must present the expired card or another official identity document where the card is unavailable. Separate representation rules apply to children and certain applicants requiring assistance.
The renewal charge is S/22.10 under code 07561, payable through Banco de la Nacion or Pagalo.pe. Select card renewal in the digital agency, retain the electronic registration confirmation and check the mailbox. The procedure describes issuance within 72 hours, followed by booking collection at the selected regional office. Bring the registration confirmation and the relevant travel or identity document. These steps concern production and collection of the card, not an extension of residence.
Plan travel before leaving a pending residence application
Migraciones has a separate, free travel-permission procedure for people with a pending change of immigration status or residence extension. It requires regular immigration status, presence in Peru, the form and a legible valid travel document. Each journey needs its own authorisation, requested before departure, and the authorised absence lasts 30 calendar days. Exceeding that period can cause loss of the pending procedure.
The travel page mentions applying 48 hours before departure but also publishes a seven-working-day service period. Applicants should allow for that difference and confirm the permission before relying on a planned journey. Use the travel-permission resource for this task; neither a card-renewal receipt nor an extension submission should be assumed to replace it.
