Apply for the work route before arranging the journey
People travelling to Pitcairn for temporary work must obtain a work visa before departure. The government’s immigration page lists an application charge of NZ$300, a six-month visa and the possibility of applying for an extension before expiry. This current guide explains the evidence and timing; it does not announce a new recruitment round or guaranteed vacancy.
The Governor decides applications after consulting the Island Council. Applicants must supply police certificates from their citizenship country and every other country where they have lived for more than twelve months, alongside the completed application and medical evidence. Use the government’s work section and linked forms to prepare the file well ahead of travel. No universal decision deadline is promised, so an intended sailing date should not be treated as confirmation of permission.
Explain support arrangements and check the insurance wording
The official 2026 work-visa form asks about the applicant’s employment, funds for maintenance and accommodation, and any sponsorship. Evidence can include accessible bank funds or credit. A sponsor must provide a signed undertaking identifying the sponsor, the relationship and responsibility for maintenance and accommodation throughout the stay. An informal promise should not be substituted for that written evidence.
The form also explains adequate insurance: it must cover the whole permitted period, medical treatment, emergency medical evacuation and repatriation of remains. Exclusions must not unreasonably restrict activities consistent with the visa’s purpose, and the insurer must be reputable. Use these requirements when checking a policy for the proposed work, rather than buy cover intended only for a holiday. The form permits a Governor’s waiver, which should not be assumed without confirmation. Disclose immigration refusals and relevant character history as the application asks; incomplete or misleading answers can have legal consequences.
Book the medical with the approved type of practitioner
The general medical certificate recognises Immigration New Zealand’s panel physicians. Where a listed physician exists in the applicant’s country, that physician must complete the certificate. Otherwise, a registered medical practitioner can do so. The form links the physician list, allowing applicants to identify the appropriate clinic before paying for an examination that may not satisfy the instructions.
The certificate asks applicants to bring identity evidence, three recent passport photographs, medication details and relevant health records. It must be completed in English. All children need a medical examination; the form gives separate exceptions for routine chest X-rays below eleven and blood tests below fifteen, unless requested by the physician or government. A previously supplied certificate completed within thirty-six months may remove the need for a new one if the government retained it. Confirm that exception before relying on an earlier examination. The applicant bears examination, test and delivery costs; the published form does not establish one worldwide clinic price.
Complete the separate chest certificate and retain the supporting reports
The chest X-ray certificate is a separate resource, not merely a tick on the main application. The form requires a separate certificate for each person examined. Its notes require a radiologist and prohibit completion by a related radiologist or radiographer. Where approved panel physicians are available, the stated panel requirement applies. Read this form with the general medical instructions before arranging any examination, including a child’s case where an exception may apply.
The chest form asks for a recent colour photograph, photographic identification and completion of the applicant’s section before attendance. The declaration is completed in the radiographer’s presence. The report must accompany the certificate, and a certified translation is needed where an accompanying specialist report is not in English. Further reports or tests can be requested at the applicant’s expense. Use the form to check that the clinic returns a complete evidential package. Submit the documents through the government immigration page’s contact channel and track the actual visa expiry separately from the age of any medical record.
