Check the sponsor’s employment category
Qatar’s family residence rules link sponsorship to employment and housing. This current-rule guide examines the Ministry of Interior’s changes reported by Qatar News Agency on 3 December 2023, rather than a new announcement on 2 November.
Government and semi-government employees need employer-provided family accommodation or a salary of at least QAR 10,000, evidenced through their employment contract. Private-sector employees must hold a technical or specialised occupation and earn at least QAR 10,000, or QAR 6,000 with contractual family accommodation. Use the QNA announcement to identify the category to discuss with the ministry.
Children aged 6–18 must attend a licensed school in Qatar or have evidence of education abroad submitted through the education ministry’s platform. The requirement applies when issuing or renewing their residence permits.
Prepare the entry application and budget separately
The Ministry of Interior’s family residence entry service is the resource for the initial application requirements. It lists an attested employment contract identifying occupation and salary, an attested document establishing the family relationship, and an attested good-conduct certificate for adults. It also requires the applicable medical examination abroad under the authorities’ arrangements. Applicants should establish how those arrangements apply in their country before booking an examination.
The listed entry-visa charge is QAR 200. That is the charge for this particular entry service, rather than a verified total for residence cards, examinations, legalisation, insurance or subsequent renewals. Ask the ministry which additional procedures and payments apply to each family member. Its page identifies Ministry of Interior service centres and headquarters as service locations and reserves the possibility of additional conditions.
An approved residence entry visa and a completed residence process are different milestones. Families should retain the application decision and follow the instructions attached to it, including its individual validity dates, before committing to travel.
Resolve document and eligibility questions before filing
The UK government’s Living in Qatar guidance provides a useful document checklist for British families. It includes the application form, passport and photographs, medical clearance, employment contract, salary certificate and six months of bank statements. Marriage or birth certificates establish the relevant relationship. Stepchild applications can require the biological father’s consent or evidence concerning parental responsibility, with individual consideration by the Qatari authorities.
That UK guidance states a QAR 10,000 salary threshold and describes additional restrictions for female sponsors. Its simplified threshold does not reproduce the contractual housing alternatives in Qatar’s own announcement. Applicants who depend on an alternative should seek a determination from the Ministry of Interior rather than assume either page guarantees their eligibility.
For British civil-status documents, the UK page explains the legalisation and Qatari embassy attestation steps. Those UK-specific steps should not be applied automatically to certificates issued elsewhere. The same resource directs unresolved application questions to the Qatari authorities; the British embassy cannot decide a residence application.
A family residence permit does not complete employment permission
A relative who intends to take employment should also use the Ministry of Labour’s Work-Permits User Guide. It describes an employer-led special permit for people already resident under family sponsorship, allowing the existing residence category to remain in place. This is separate from obtaining permission to join the family.
The business representative enters the resident’s Qatar ID, proposed profession, permit duration and salary components, and uploads the required photograph and education evidence. After initial acceptance, the guide describes obtaining the police-clearance referral from My Requests, securing the clearance and attaching it to complete submission. Saving a draft is distinct from submitting it for review.
The guide does not establish a universal completion date for every applicant. The practical sequence is to resolve sponsorship eligibility, complete the family immigration requirements, and have the prospective employer arrange the applicable labour permission before employment begins. Neither this guide nor the cited residence pages announces a new general filing deadline; individual visa validity and renewal dates still require attention.
