Check two dates before booking a return
Residents who have remained outside Qatar for more than six continuous months should establish their return-permit position before travelling. Article 14 of Law 21/2015 requires return permission obtained before departure or before a year has elapsed from departure, with prescribed fees and a condition that residence must not have expired more than sixty days earlier. The minister or delegate may waive the stated periods. These are legal conditions, not a guaranteed approval or an automatic grace period for boarding.
The Interior Ministry service page, however, expressly describes the ordinary return visa as subject to a valid residence permit. Someone whose card expired abroad therefore needs the authority to identify the applicable expired-residence procedure rather than assuming the ordinary online service must accept them. Compare the departure date and residence expiry date separately; a card valid until next year does not remove the long-absence requirement.
Use the sponsor category that matches the residence
The Interior Ministry distinguishes personal sponsorship by a Qatari citizen, personal sponsorship by an expatriate resident, and company sponsorship. For Qatari personal sponsorship, the listed category covers domestic workers and similar persons abroad more than six months; the sponsor supplies the application and copies of the worker’s Qatar ID and sponsor’s identity card. For an expatriate’s family members, the list instead asks for the sponsor’s application, the sponsored person’s passport copy and the sponsor’s passport or identity card.
Company-sponsored applicants need the sponsor’s application, the resident’s passport copy and the establishment card. The published fee is QAR 200 for Qatari personal sponsorship and QAR 500 for either expatriate personal or corporate sponsorship. The page lists electronic channels and immigration service centres. Because it still uses the older Metrash2 name, confirm the current app workflow instead of treating that label as a separate permission.
Complete the return form for the actual reason
The General Directorate of Passports return-permit form separates three reasons: exceeding the legal time abroad, residence expiring abroad, and a lost or damaged passport or residence permit. Choose the factual reason. The presence of an expired-residence box does not itself establish eligibility or override the ordinary service page’s valid-permit condition.
The form records each traveller’s name, nationality, personal identification number, relationship and residence expiry date. Sponsor details distinguish an individual from a company and include the relevant identification or establishment-registration number and signature. It also asks for the departure date, which is important when the absence period is being assessed.
Listed attachments include passport and residence-permit copies, the sponsor’s residence permit, company establishment registration where relevant, a certified school certificate for students and a certified loss report from the country where a passport or residence permit was lost. Supply the evidence relevant to the actual case; do not replace a missing loss report with an unexplained blank.
Budget for any required examination after arrival
The Health Ministry’s medical-examination service includes return-visa cases involving more than six months outside Qatar. Its document list includes the applicant’s passport, residence permit for return or renewal cases and the sponsor’s mobile number. A detailed personal-data certificate from the relevant authority is listed where the passport was lost. A pregnancy-test report from an accredited centre is listed if pregnancy is uncertain.
The published examination charge is QAR 100, separate from the Interior Ministry return-visa fee. The instructions say to visit the Medical Commission as soon as possible after entering Qatar, and that fasting is unnecessary. Contact 44070000 to establish the examination arrangements applicable to the returning resident.
The catalogue gives an estimated delivery time of six days and one hour. That is an institutional estimate for this health service, not an entry-permit processing promise or a reason to book travel before immigration permission is resolved. The reviewed sources do not settle whether every individual return case requires the same examination sequence.
