Saint Kitts and Nevis

Saint Kitts and Nevis travellers must wait for UK ETA approval before departure

A pending application is insufficient for eligible visitors travelling to the United Kingdom. The passport used, immigration status and type of airport connection determine the next step.

Check approval before leaving for the airport

Saint Kitts and Nevis’ High Commission in London warned that eligible travellers must hold approved UK permission before departure from 25 February 2026. Proof of a pending Electronic Travel Authorisation application no longer suffices for boarding. This is a current follow-up to that enforcement arrangement, not a newly announced November requirement. Travellers should check the decision itself, particularly when an application is submitted shortly before a flight.

The ministry’s published notice says applicants must use the passport they intend to travel with and recommends applying at least three working days ahead. That advice matters when a passport has recently changed or different family members use different nationalities. An approval linked to one person’s document should not be treated as covering the rest of a booking. Use the ministry’s country-specific notice to identify the affected travel route, then the current UK service to make the application.

Prepare the application and confirm the current charge

The live GOV.UK application service lists a £20 charge, which is non-refundable once an application is made. Applicants need their travelling passport, an email address and an accepted payment method, plus the required photograph. They can use the official app or apply online. Applying through a commercial website does not buy a faster government decision.

The service says decisions usually arrive within a day but can take up to three working days, and travellers must wait for the confirmation email before travelling. Different members of the same group may receive decisions at different times. Check spam or junk folders before contacting UKVI about a decision outstanding beyond three working days. The approval is digitally linked to the passport used and lasts two years or until that passport expires, whichever is sooner. If application details need changing, the service says to apply again rather than assume an existing approval has been amended.

Establish whether a connection crosses UK border control

The Home Office’s current factsheet distinguishes airport connections requiring entry from those remaining airside. Eligible passengers passing through passport control need an ETA. Passengers connecting through Heathrow or Manchester without passing border control do not currently need one. Ask the airline about the actual transfer arrangement, including baggage collection, terminal changes and whether a hotel requires leaving the international transit area.

The factsheet also emphasizes that an ETA authorizes travel, not guaranteed admission. A booking described as transit does not by itself establish an exemption. Recheck the route if the itinerary changes or a disruption requires an overnight stay outside the airport. The resource is useful for identifying the border-control distinction; the carrier can confirm the operational transfer arrangement for the booked flights.

Use the correct evidence when an ETA is unnecessary

The UK’s exemption guidance identifies British and Irish citizens, people with existing UK permission and other specified categories who do not need an ETA. Dual British citizens should check the documents proving their British status rather than attempt to use an ETA as a substitute. The UK border-control resource provides separate advice for British citizens and travellers with digital immigration status. The exemption guidance also addresses qualifying residents of Ireland travelling within the Common Travel Area. That exception depends on residence and the journey, so it should not be assumed to apply to every Saint Kitts and Nevis visitor who makes a connection in Ireland.

For travellers using a Saint Kitts and Nevis passport without another qualifying status, the passport must be valid for the whole UK stay. Where a UK eVisa is held, check that the current passport is linked to the relevant UKVI account before departure. An ETA application is not a repair for incorrect account details. Use the UK border-control guidance to identify the evidence appropriate to existing permission, and ask the carrier about any document it cannot validate. Neither the embassy notice nor the application service guarantees boarding or entry in a disputed individual case.
