Saint Martin visitors using the Dutch-side airport must check route-specific visa exemptions

Current guidance separates French-side permission from Dutch Caribbean arrival rules, including a conditional overland exemption and the limits of Schengen documents.

The arrival airport and the hotel may fall under different authorities

A holiday booked in French Saint Martin may begin at Princess Juliana International Airport in Dutch Sint Maarten. Canada’s Saint Martin advisory identifies that airport as serving both sides of the island, while Grand Case-Espérance is on the French side and serves local destinations. That distinction changes which arrival rules must be checked before boarding. This is current route guidance, not an announcement of a new border closure or visa policy.

For ordinary Canadian-passport tourists, the advisory states that a visa is not required for stays up to ninety days on the French side, but residence, work, business and student purposes have separate requirements. It asks for passport validity extending six months beyond expected departure and notes possible checks on onward travel, accommodation and funds. Use Canada’s advisory for Canadian travellers, rather than copying its passport standard to every nationality. Check the complete flight and ferry itinerary before relying on a hotel’s French address to identify the arrival jurisdiction.

A Dutch-side overland exemption is conditional

NetherlandsWorldwide describes an exemption for travellers entering Sint Maarten to proceed overland to French Saint Martin: they must show a confirmed hotel reservation and hold a French visa where their nationality and situation require one. This is more specific than assuming everyone needs the same Dutch Caribbean visa. The same official page separately says holders of a Saint Martin visa do not need a visa for Sint Maarten, while that document does not remove visa requirements for other Caribbean parts of the Kingdom.

Use the Dutch government’s visa-needed page to match the actual document and route. It also identifies exemptions for valid French-overseas residence documents and qualifying multiple-entry Schengen visas. Its airport-transit exemption for Sint Maarten is limited to onward travel on the same calendar day. A traveller changing plans to an overnight stay should therefore recheck the applicable category rather than stretch a same-day rule. None of these exemptions establishes permission to work, settle or remain indefinitely on either side.

French overseas permission and Schengen permission are different

France-Visas explains that French territories outside Europe are outside the Schengen area, explicitly including Saint Martin. Its FAQ warns that a Schengen visa does not itself cover entry into France’s non-European territories, and that an overseas visa does not itself authorise entry into Schengen. Where a separate exemption applies, that must be identified on its own terms. The geographical distinction remains relevant even when the journey uses French airlines or includes a connection in Paris.

Use the France-Visas FAQ and visa assessment for the French segment, with the traveller’s nationality, passport type, residence document, purpose and duration. The Dutch rule accepting certain Schengen documents is a Dutch exemption; it cannot be used as proof that France accepts the same document for Saint Martin. As an illustrative routing problem, an applicant connecting through Europe and landing at Princess Juliana may need three separate checks: European transit or entry, Dutch-side arrival, and the planned French-side stay. A single reservation does not merge those jurisdictions.

Prepare the right evidence and distinguish published fee categories

The UK’s entry guidance, specifically for full British-citizen passports, describes visa-free visits of up to three months and passport validity at least three months after planned departure. Residents should carry their residence document as well as their passport. It notes that there is no physical border between the island’s two sides, but also directs longer stays, work, study and other purposes to France-Visas. The absence of a checkpoint should not replace the pre-travel document assessment.

France-Visas’ official fee table lists the ordinary short-stay visa for Saint Martin at EUR60, with EUR35 for children aged six to under twelve and specified exemptions, including children under six. This differs from its Schengen fee category. Pay only where a visa is actually required and check any service-provider charges separately. Before departure, confirm the arrival route, qualifying exemption or issued visa, passport validity and accommodation evidence. No reviewed resource guarantees admission or confirms every nationality’s eligibility. VisaWand editorial team edits and checks this guidance.
