Seychelles student permits do not authorise part-time work
Foreign students must budget for their studies without assuming a right to take a local job. University and immigration fee guidance also needs to be reconciled before payment.

Check the study category and prepare the immigration evidence
Seychelles Immigration and Civil Status says a student permit may be granted to a non-Seychellois, other than a visitor, accepted by an approved educational institution. Its guidance also covers a dependent child studying while a parent lives in Seychelles, including continuing studies after reaching 18. This is a current guide to the published route, not an announcement of new admission rights on 2 November.
The immigration checklist requires the institution’s acceptance, evidence of financial support for the course, the passport biographical page, two recent passport photographs and a full birth certificate with translation where necessary. Accommodation evidence may also be requested. The published charges are SCR 1,000 for processing at submission and SCR 1,500 on approval for one year or part of a year. Use the immigration student-permit page to obtain its linked application form and confirm the applicable requirements. The page does not publish a guaranteed decision time, a universal annual application deadline or a nationality-based fee exemption.
Secure admission and clarify the fee discrepancy before paying
The University of Seychelles tells international applicants to obtain their student permit before travelling. Its admission process is separate: applicants submit the programme form, certified educational certificates or transcripts, passport copy, photographs, CV and payment evidence. Mature applicants may need work-experience evidence. The institution lists a non-refundable USD 45 programme-application processing fee. Applicants without a status notification after six weeks are directed to contact its student information service; that is not an immigration processing promise.
The university’s international-student page also lists USD 500 as proof of payment for a student permit, which does not match immigration’s SCR-denominated processing and annual charges. It describes the permit as lasting for the academic programme, whereas immigration publishes a charge for each year or part. Ask Student Services and immigration to reconcile the amount, period and collection arrangements in writing before transferring money. Do not simply add every figure together or treat the university’s figure as a confirmed replacement for immigration’s tariff. The university page is the resource for admission and institutional submission arrangements.
A local job needs a separate employment route
The immigration department’s gainful-occupation guidance says expatriates need a Gainful Occupation Permit for full-time or part-time work, whether paid or unpaid. A student should therefore not fund tuition or living costs on the assumption that a campus job, casual shift or unpaid placement is automatically permitted. Anyone proposing work should ask immigration how the activity and existing study status must be handled before beginning it.
For employment, the published sequence starts with the relevant Employment Ministry approval, followed by the GOP application to immigration at least one week before the proposed start. The prospective employer completes the employment application. The guidance also warns prospective workers against entering Seychelles to take up employment before obtaining the GOP. Use this separate official permit page to discuss the correct employment authorisation with the employer. Neither an admission letter nor a pending student application establishes that approval, and the one-week submission lead time is not a promise of a decision by the starting date.
Prepare the journey using the correct immigration purpose
The immigration visiting-Seychelles page distinguishes visitor entry from residence permission. The visitor permit it describes covers holidays, business and visits to friends or family; it is not presented as the student-permit application. Its rules also exclude a person already holding a valid permit entitling them to reside in Seychelles from that visitor category. A student with an approval should therefore ask how to present that approval at travel and arrival, rather than assume the ordinary tourist route completes their study formalities.
The same page links the official travel immigration forms and requires accurate accommodation information. It says passports must remain valid for the intended stay through the return to the country of origin or residence. Check that validity against the actual study and travel plans. If accommodation changes, immigration asks to be notified promptly. Use the visiting guidance for these journey and address obligations, alongside the student-permit approval, not as evidence that study or local employment is authorised.
