Routine US visa cases from Sierra Leone are handled in Monrovia

Current guidance assigns routine US visa processing for Sierra Leone to Liberia. Applicants must distinguish the interview location from separate nationality restrictions before paying or travelling.

Use the assigned post rather than travelling to Freetown

The US State Department moved routine visa services for Sierra Leone to a regional hub from 1 August 2026. Its announcement was issued on 15 July; this is a current guide to using that arrangement, rather than a new November announcement. Both its nonimmigrant and immigrant visa post directories now direct Sierra Leone applicants to Monrovia, Liberia. These directories help residents identify the servicing embassy for their category before making travel plans.

The regional announcement says applicants scheduling from the operative date must use the designated post and its payment arrangements. People with previously booked appointments should check the instructions sent about their own case. The change did not close the embassy in Freetown: American citizen services and limited nonimmigrant services remain. An old understanding that all embassy services have moved would therefore also be inaccurate.

Check nationality restrictions before making a payment

Moving an interview does not make an otherwise restricted applicant eligible for a visa. The separate State Department notice on Presidential Proclamation 10998 places Sierra Leone among countries subject to full immigrant and nonimmigrant visa issuance suspension from 1 January 2026, subject to limited exceptions. This affects nationality; the regional servicing arrangement concerns where applications are handled. A foreign national living in Sierra Leone must therefore check the rule applying to their own passport, rather than assume the residence country alone determines the restriction.

The notice says the proclamation applies to people outside the United States on its effective date who lacked a valid visa then. It does not revoke visas valid on that date. Exceptions include specified official travel, lawful permanent residents and certain dual nationals travelling on a passport from a country outside the restrictions. Applying or attending an interview is not assurance of issuance. Applicants relying on an exception should seek case-specific instructions before incurring travel costs.

Immigrant applicants need two embassy visits

Monrovia’s immigrant visa instructions require an online appointment-service account and at least two embassy visits: prescreening and biometrics, then the visa interview. The embassy schedules the preliminary document review two weeks before the interview; applicants should not independently book that review. This makes a plan allowing only one brief visit risky.

The checklist calls for the interview letter where applicable, DS-260 confirmation, a passport, photographs and original civil records with copies and certified English translations where required. Additional evidence depends on the case, including family sponsorship, marriage or police records. Use that checklist for the actual document bundle; these immigrant requirements should not be applied automatically to a visitor application.

Resolve medical instructions before booking an examination

The regional-hub announcement allows an immigrant medical examination in the home country where an approved panel physician exists, or at the processing hub. However, Monrovia’s local instructions direct applicants to designated doctors in Liberia and advise arranging the examination at least two weeks before the interview. Applicants facing that difference should obtain written case-specific confirmation from the processing embassy before paying a doctor or assuming an examination elsewhere will be accepted.

The national interview-preparation resource explains that each accompanying immigrant applicant needs an approved examination and required vaccinations before interview. It also says missing required documents can prevent completion and lead to further appointments. Together, these resources help families coordinate documents, medical availability and travel around the assigned date rather than treating the interview as their only deadline.

Budget by visa category and await individual instructions

The official visa-fee schedule lists US$185 for common non-petition temporary categories, including visitor and student applications, and different charges for other routes. That amount is not a universal immigrant visa fee. Check the category and the designated post’s payment instructions before paying; processing fees are generally non-refundable. Medical, transport and accommodation costs need separate provision. Neither a fee receipt nor travel to Monrovia resolves an issuance restriction.
