Plan beyond the one-year permission before relocating
Slovenia’s digital-nomad residence permit, introduced on 21 November 2025, is valid for up to one year and cannot be extended. The Interior Ministry says a new digital-nomad application is possible six months after the earlier permit expires. This current guide is relevant as the route approaches its first anniversary; it does not assume that all holders share the anniversary as their personal expiry date.
The government’s launch notice defines the route around remote work for an entity outside Slovenia or self-employment abroad, performed through communications technology. The worker must not be entering the Slovenian labour market under this category. Non-EU and non-EEA applicants should therefore identify where the employer or business is established and what activity will actually be undertaken, rather than assume any portable job qualifies.
The same notice allows a holder to apply during the permit’s validity for another temporary-residence purpose where appropriate, such as local employment. That is an application opportunity, not an automatic conversion. A person considering a Slovenian job should establish the new route and its conditions before relying on the digital-nomad permit for that activity.
Prepare the official form and evidence of overseas work
The Interior Ministry’s digital-nomad application form asks for identity and residence details, the intended purpose, financial support, insurance and the overseas employer or self-employed business. It requests the business address and registration or tax identification information. These fields give an applicant a concrete basis for obtaining employer or company evidence before filing, especially where a trading name differs from the legal entity named on the contract.
The attached checklist requests a photograph, passport or certified copy, appropriate health-cover evidence, financial means, a home-country criminal-record certificate and evidence of the qualifying overseas activity. It specifies passport validity at least three months beyond the intended Slovenian stay. Check the passport against the proposed period before paying for documents that would support a longer application than it can cover.
Use the official form rather than a generic employment-permit template. Keep the remote-work arrangement, declared employer and supporting contract consistent. If part of the proposed work involves a Slovenian customer, employer or local business, obtain clarification about the correct category rather than omit that part of the arrangement from the application.
Distinguish household support from the principal applicant’s funds
The government’s InfoTujci guidance sets the principal applicant’s monthly financial requirement at twice Slovenia’s average net monthly salary. Use the currently applicable official benchmark, rather than a fixed euro amount copied from an older travel article. The reviewed material did not establish a sufficiently reliable current euro assessment for a particular application, so applicants should confirm the amount and acceptable evidence with the receiving authority.
InfoTujci’s separate questions make clear that this principal-applicant amount does not cover the whole family: additional means must be demonstrated for accompanying relatives. The digital-nomad framework permits immediate family reunification, but each relevant family application and its evidence still need to be prepared. Do not assume that removing a waiting period removes relationship, identity or financial checks.
The questions also direct tax-residence matters to Slovenia’s Financial Administration. Immigration permission should not be treated as a decision that overseas earnings are tax-free. A household moving its home or business arrangements should obtain the relevant tax assessment separately, using the official Financial Administration procedure rather than infer the answer from the name of the residence category.
Use the correct filing location and retain the actual expiry
InfoTujci explains that a person legally present in Slovenia can apply at an administrative unit, while an applicant abroad uses a Slovenian diplomatic or consular post. Its guidance distinguishes the certificate issued for a qualifying in-country application from the overseas process. Confirm the basis and remaining period of lawful stay before relying on an in-country filing; a planned application is not an admission document.
The process includes fingerprint collection and personal collection of the residence card, followed by the required address-registration step. Ask the receiving office for its current appointment, translation and payment instructions. The sources reviewed did not establish a verified all-inclusive application fee, so obtain the assessed government charge and distinguish it from insurance, translations or private assistance costs.
The practical next action is to assemble the overseas-work file, confirm the current financial benchmark and calculate the timetable from the individual permission. If a different residence purpose is intended afterwards, prepare that application while the digital-nomad permission remains valid. Neither a private contract nor the ability to reapply after a six-month interval supplies permission for an otherwise uncovered period.
