Use the 2026 tariff rather than an older assessment price
South Africa’s Qualifications Authority charges R2,361 to evaluate a first foreign qualification under its 2026/27 tariff, effective from 1 April 2026. Each additional qualification submitted with the first costs R988. These are qualification-assessment charges, separate from any work-visa application, professional registration or translation expense. This current planning guide, checked on 2 November, does not describe the April tariff as a new November increase.
The official tariff notice says evaluation fees are non-refundable and that a non-compliant application can forfeit the charge. Applicants are afforded 30 calendar days to remedy non-compliance. The same table marks a separate verification-only service as not yet implemented, so its listed price should not be mistaken for an available substitute for evaluation. Use SAQA’s dated tariff notice before payment, selecting the actual service and number of qualifications. Paying for one qualification does not establish that every award in a professional history will be assessed.
A compliant application includes country-specific evidence
SAQA’s application instructions require a signed and dated online application, a hand-signed consent form and accepted identity evidence. Academic records include final graduation evidence and transcripts, with sworn translations where required. The page explains exceptions where English is the language of teaching and learning, and gives additional instructions for particular awards and countries. Applicants should follow those specific instructions rather than assume a passport and degree certificate are always sufficient.
For example, the page requires an Ordinary Level or IGCSE certificate alongside an A Level or AS Level award rather than evaluating the latter alone. Doctoral applicants whose certificates omit the field should provide the thesis title or abstract, not the entire dissertation. Use this application resource to assemble the evidence appropriate to the exact qualification and awarding country. Ensure the submitted qualification names and supporting records correspond to the awards for which evaluation has actually been requested. Unrequested or incomplete material is not a reliable way to obtain a broader recognition decision.
The result locates a qualification in the national framework
SAQA’s certificate FAQ explains that evaluation checks authenticity and compares the foreign award with qualifications in South Africa’s National Qualifications Framework. Its stated processing period is three months from receiving and registering a compliant application. That starting point is important: paying a fee or beginning an online account does not necessarily mean a complete application has entered assessment.
The same resource distinguishes qualification recognition from the separate requirements for admission to study, professional licensing and employment. A favourable evaluation is therefore not itself a licence to practise a regulated profession or permission to work. Successful applicants can obtain an electronic Certificate of Evaluation through the application portal. The digital seal and QR code allow a third party to check the outcome in real time. Use the FAQ to retrieve and share the official result rather than rely on an unverified screenshot. The published processing period should be built into planning without treating it as a guaranteed decision date for an individual case.
Check the receiving mission’s work-visa instructions separately
The South African Consulate-General in Toronto’s critical-skills checklist illustrates how qualification evidence fits into a visa file. It requests a SAQA evaluation certificate or proof that an application has been submitted if the outcome is pending. It separately lists relevant professional-body confirmation, an employment offer or contract, and other immigration documents. Those are different requirements; submitting an assessment application does not establish visa approval or an unconditional right to practise.
Use the receiving mission’s current checklist to confirm how an outstanding evaluation will be treated before lodging. Toronto’s published page gives a C$115 consular fee and specifies payment by money order or bank draft, but applicants should confirm the applicable current charge and procedure with their own mission. A Canadian consular payment instruction is not a worldwide SAQA tariff. Keep the assessment receipt, eventual outcome and any professional-registration evidence available, and resolve the exact visa conditions and deadlines with the authority processing the immigration application.
