South Sudan foreign workers must check permits, registration and fingerprint deadlines separately
Current government procedures distinguish the work-permit file from entry visas and early post-arrival reporting. Employers should confirm the applicable occupation documents and assessed fees before deployment.

The work-permit form fee is not the complete permit charge
South Sudan’s Ministry of Labour publishes a separate work-permit procedure for foreign employees through its Department of Alien Employment. Its application resource lists USD100 for the form, followed by assessment and a payment voucher for the relevant permit fee. This is a current procedural guide, not a new November fee announcement. Employers should not describe the form charge as the total cost of authorising a foreign worker.
The ministry requests personal and employer evidence according to the occupation, including a valid passport, entry visa, photographs, employment contract, qualifications, company registration and tax documentation. Sector-specific records may also apply. Its process describes payment to the prescribed revenue account, a bank receipt and final verification before a smart card valid for one year from issue is supplied. Use the Work Permit Applications resource to establish the relevant category and obtain the assessed voucher; a signed contract or a payment receipt alone is not the issued permission.
Early registration and fingerprints involve separate requirements
The ministry’s FAQ cites the immigration law’s requirement for a foreign national to report to the competent authority within three days of entry. It separately describes fingerprint collection at the nearest Criminal Investigation Department office within one week, including as part of work-permit applications. Those are different actions, so completing one should not be assumed to discharge the other.
The FAQ lists an employer introduction, institutional registration and tax evidence, passport and visa copies, and photographs for fingerprint registration. It also identifies employer notification within three days of employment and a declaration within 48 hours of termination. For medical personnel, it says Health Ministry approval is needed before permit processing. Use this FAQ to ask the host which offices will handle each step and which records must be ready. The site does not give a current universal fingerprint or registration fee; confirm the assessed amount with the receiving office.
Entry visas and extensions are handled through immigration
The Ministry of Interior’s eVisa application resource directs applicants to create an account, complete the form and pay by card. After approval, the electronic PDF is downloaded and presented to the visa officer at the port of entry, where documents are checked and the passport is stamped if the application and documents are acceptable. This is a separate process from the Labour Ministry’s employment authorisation.
The portal advertises rapid electronic delivery and entry processing, but those descriptions should not be treated as guarantees for a particular traveller. Obtain the actual approval before relying on it for departure, preserve the PDF and check its purpose and dates against the work arrangements. A worker whose employer has started a permit application still needs to establish the correct entry permission. Conversely, an issued eVisa does not demonstrate that the Labour Ministry has approved the employment file or that later registration is complete.
Resolve differing reporting guidance and retain health documents
The UK government’s South Sudan entry guide says visitors staying five days or more must register with local police. That wording differs from the Labour Ministry’s three-day statutory description; foreign workers should obtain the local authority’s instructions immediately and plan around the earlier reporting period. British passport holders are also told to have six months’ validity beyond arrival and two blank pages. These requirements should be checked before deployment, rather than left until a permit is ready.
The UK resource requires yellow-fever vaccination evidence and warns that visa, permit and vaccine-document problems have contributed to harassment or detention at Juba airport. It directs visa-extension applicants to the Interior Ministry in person, making extension of immigration stay another separate action from employment renewal. The reviewed sources establish no guaranteed total processing period or complete occupation-wide fee schedule. The VisaWand editorial team edited and checked this guide. Before travel, the employer and worker should identify the entry approval, permit decision, earliest reporting deadline and official office responsible for every outstanding step.
