Check the marriage route and its full checklist

Immigration’s current service page allows a Belonger’s spouse to apply after five years living together in the territory, subject to criminal disqualification. Marriage alone does not complete that test. A person who obtained Belonger status through marriage cannot pass it to a new spouse. This guide addresses couples living together, rather than the separate surviving-spouse pathway.

The checklist requires a permanent-home statement, one photograph, certified birth, passport and marriage copies, cohabitation evidence, police and medical certificates issued within six months, the history and culture course, English evidence where applicable, qualifying references, community contributions, qualifications, bank letters and annual income evidence. The application fee is US$250, non-refundable; an approval brings a separate status fee whose amount Immigration supplies. Use the complete linked checklist when assigning each document to its provider.

Use the electronic route rather than an archived paper pack

The government announced electronic Residence and Belonger applications on 11 September 2025, effective from 15 September that year. Its announcement says applications and supporting documents are submitted electronically, replacing paper submissions. Therefore a family finding an old downloadable application should begin with the current service rather than assume that delivering that historical pack completes filing today.

The announcement identifies the Status Unit as the contact for application questions, on (284) 468-4705 or 4700. Use that contact to resolve which evidence fits an unusual family history before submitting. The announcement establishes the change of submission channel; it does not promise that an individual case will be approved or assessed within a particular number of days.

Order the local police certificate as a separate service

The police service page directs applicants to print and sign its form and bring the original valid passport, two photographs less than six months old and US$20 per certificate. It asks for identity and passport details, the reason for the certificate, the number required and disclosure of convictions, including traffic offences. If ordering additional copies, the instructions require another photograph for each extra copy.

Submit the packet at the Administration Office of Road Town Police Station on Tortola. Keep the payment receipt for collection. The page publishes three working days for the police certificate; that is the police service’s stated turnaround, not an Immigration decision timetable. Someone handing in or collecting documents for another person needs that person’s written authority. The published administration hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Separate this police expense from the immigration application charge when budgeting.

Arrange the medical certificate with the examining doctor

The government’s examining-physicians brochure explains that an overseas medical examination must have its authenticity checked by a physician registered in the Virgin Islands. That locally registered practitioner issues the fitness certificate. An overseas test report and the certificate intended for Immigration therefore serve different functions; ask the practitioner which material they need to perform that verification.

The brochure describes medical history and physical examination, a chest X-ray with a radiologist’s report, and laboratory testing according to the history and physician’s judgment. It says Mantoux, VDRL and stool tests are no longer required under that published screening guidance. Medical records remain with the examining physician; the signed medical certificate is returned to Immigration. This is older government clinical guidance, not a newly announced examination protocol. Ask the practitioner to check its current application before paying for testing, and obtain a quotation because the reviewed material establishes no current medical charge.

Save the online application and distinguish completion from a decision

The current Immigration E-Services page provides the Residence / Belonger Status application, document submission, fee payment and progress tracking. Sign in before starting so progress can be saved and resumed. This makes it possible to prepare the application while collecting documents without treating an unfinished draft as a submission.

The portal labels its estimated completion time as 20–30 minutes. That describes filling in the service, not the time to obtain status. Its processing FAQ instead says timing varies with application type and completeness, with email updates as the application progresses. Keep access to the registered email address and use the application’s help facility if a document cannot be uploaded. No fixed approval deadline or automatic permission while awaiting a decision was established by these public instructions.
