Check the ordinary spouse category and interview requirement

A foreign national applying for a first spouse residence visa in Sri Lanka should prepare both partners' paperwork and arrange the health assessment before submission. The Immigration Department's ordinary spouse category requires a marriage subsisting for more than six months. It lists the first grant as one year, free of visa charge. This does not make the entire preparation process free or establish a right to work.

The Sri Lankan spouse must attend an interview and provide consent. Employment-approved spouse categories have separate conditions; ordinary marriage-based residence should not be assumed to include them. Confirm the intended category and appointment with Immigration.

Prepare the Sri Lankan partner’s signed application pack

The department's first-issuance form for the Sri Lankan spouse contains a detailed attachment checklist. It calls for the marriage certificate, the Sri Lankan partner's birth certificate and national identity card, plus citizenship-by-registration or dual-citizenship evidence where relevant. The applicant's passport, its identity-page copy, the general residence Form A and separate particulars from each spouse are also listed.

The form asks for two colour photographs measuring 3.5 by 4.5 centimetres and a consent letter from the Sri Lankan partner. Where applicable, it lists a divorce decree and an embassy letter about the foreign spouse's civil status. For accompanying foreign children it lists their own passports, passport-page copies, birth certificates, Form A and photographs. Treat that as a separate child application pack rather than assuming the marriage documents cover everyone. The authority can request further documents.

Answer the foreign spouse’s financial and marriage questions

The separate foreign-spouse form asks about nationality, country of domicile, education and previous employment. It also requests documentary evidence of income from employment, pensions or other sources, and evidence of money remitted to Sri Lanka. Prepare records that answer those questions instead of supplying only a marriage certificate.

The form records when and where the marriage occurred and its certificate number. If it is not registered in the country of domicile, it asks for a letter from the embassy, high commission or home authority confirming that position. Previous marriages require the relevant divorce or death documentation. These questions help applicants assemble their actual history; the form does not itself publish a universal minimum remittance amount.

Book the health assessment and budget separately

The Ministry of Health's assessment portal says applicants should apply for the Health Protection Plan within seven days of entry, before the residence application. Its published fee is USD75 per person, paid in Sri Lankan rupees by cash or card. The assessment is valid for one year. Check any claimed exemption against Immigration's category-specific instructions rather than assuming marriage alone creates one.

Book online and bring the original passport, any previous passports, a copy of the passport identity page and the printed appointment confirmation. Where Immigration holds the original passport, the portal specifies certified evidence and the department's receipt instead. Walk-ins are not accepted. Request an interpreter or accessibility arrangements through registration if needed. The portal gives differing three-day and two-working-day wording for cancellation or rescheduling; arrange changes early through its contact number, +94 11 2209600, rather than assuming a last-minute cancellation is accepted.

Resolve the entry route before travelling or changing status

The Sri Lankan embassy in Poland describes prior departmental approval for residence-related entry, but expressly says foreign spouses can request conversion or extension of a visit visa at the department's discretion. That spouse-specific wording is an exception to its general warning against visitor conversion, not a guarantee that an application will succeed.

Its page also describes annual renewal, whereas Immigration publishes a specific spouse extension schedule. Use the department's category instructions when asking how a first application will be handled, and confirm the permission needed to remain while it is considered. No automatic extension of an existing visit visa was established by these sources. Someone already in Sri Lanka should resolve that question before current permission expires; someone abroad should settle the entry route before travelling.
