Sri Lanka’s free tourist ETA still requires an application: check nationality, return travel and the stay limit
This current guide follows the fee-free tourist scheme introduced on 25 May 2026. It distinguishes a fee exemption from exemption from advance travel authorisation and explains how double entry and extensions work.

Fee-free tourist permission is not permission to skip the application
Sri Lanka's tourist Electronic Travel Authorization scheme waives the charge for eligible nationalities while retaining the advance-application requirement. The Department of Immigration and Emigration's notice took effect on 25 May 2026. This is a current explanation of that scheme, not a report that another group became eligible today. Travellers should establish both whether they qualify for the fee waiver and whether they have actually obtained the appropriate authorization before arrival.
The department's country notice lists 40 nationalities, including India, Pakistan, Nepal, China, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. Its scope covers the listed countries' ordinary, diplomatic, official and service passports for the specified tourist scheme. Nationality is the relevant comparison: residing in a listed country does not make a passport from another country eligible for the same concession. Use the complete official notice to match the passport you intend to present.
Read the duration and double-entry provision together
The official ETA information page describes a 30-day fee-free tourist authorization with double entry for the listed group. A second entry during that validity period provides only the balance of the original 30 days. It does not start another full month. An illustrative traveller leaving briefly and returning should calculate the remaining period from the first arrival rather than assume that crossing the border resets the allowance.
The page separately identifies reciprocal arrangements for Maldives, Seychelles and Singapore. Maldivian nationals receive a 90-day tourist authorization under the stated bilateral arrangement, while the fee schedule lists 30 days for Singapore and Seychelles. These country-specific provisions should not be used to enlarge the duration for every traveller on the 40-country list. Check the actual grant and the admission record instead of relying only on a fee-free headline.
Use the official application and verify passport details before submission
The online application terms require the passport number, nationality and date of birth to be entered correctly and instruct travellers to use the same travel document on entry as in the application. They warn that inconsistent particulars or a different document can require payment again on arrival. Review those fields before confirming the form, particularly after renewing a passport or when holding more than one nationality.
The terms also require air travellers to be able to show a round-trip ticket and evidence of sufficient funds. They explain that authorization does not guarantee admission if the traveller is inadmissible. For someone applying before finalising travel, the official FAQ says a ticket is not needed merely to obtain an ETA; that does not cancel the separate evidence requirement at entry. Application preparation and border clearance occur at different stages.
Check the actual fee category and avoid assuming that every service is free
Use the ETA fee schedule for applicants outside the free-nationality arrangements and for a purpose other than tourism. Its table distinguishes the submission method and tourist or business category, so a charge for one category should not be copied onto another. The schedule also provides a free tourist ETA for children under twelve for up to 30 days, while stating that longer stays can attract nationality-based extension charges.
The department's scheme notice says ETA charges paid before 25 May are not refundable under the new concession. The application terms also describe processing charges as non-refundable and non-transferable where payable. A traveller should therefore confirm the category and concession before completing payment, rather than assume a later policy change or an unused trip will generate a refund. The official government resources, rather than an intermediary's price, establish the applicable immigration charge.
Apply for a longer stay through the extension process before the existing permission ends
The special notice permits holders of the free tourist authorization to seek an extension beyond 30 days on payment of the applicable visa fee. The ETA fee page links directly to the immigration department's extension service for use after arrival. A free initial authorization should not be treated as a free extension, and a new travel booking is not evidence that additional stay has been granted.
The practical next step is to match the passport to the notice, use the official online application, retain the correct travel document and plan around the granted stay. The application terms prohibit employment, paid or unpaid, and activities outside the authorized purpose. The cited scheme material does not promise approval by a particular flight date or establish an automatic right to change into another immigration category. Resolve such cases with the department before relying on the tourist route.
