Sudan entry visas do not replace registration, travel permits or exit checks
Current official guidance separates consular approval from post-arrival registration and permission to leave or travel between states. Applicants should also resolve conflicting published fee and vaccine information.

Prepare a purpose-specific consular application
Sudan-bound applicants should separate the entry-visa file from registration, internal travel permission and any exit-visa requirement. The Sudanese Embassy in Washington’s Entry Visa resource lists a signed form, passport valid for at least six months, a photograph and a sponsor letter for business, work, humanitarian and other applications. This is a current procedural guide, not an announcement of a new general arrival-visa scheme.
The sponsor letter must identify the work, intended duration, financial responsibility and references in Sudan. Humanitarian applicants also need the relevant Humanitarian Aid Commission certificate, while non-US passport holders applying in Washington must provide valid US residence evidence. The page lists USD154 processing fees and warns that a flight itinerary does not expedite a decision. Ask the mission to confirm the current charge for the exact category, since other embassy fee documents show different amounts for some applicants. Do not send a passport or payment based solely on an older downloaded schedule.
Use the embassy’s payment and return-document instructions
The separate Forms and Instructions resource supplies the visa form and other consular-document links, including emergency travel documents and no-objection letters. Its payment section distinguishes mailed applications from applications delivered at the embassy. For mail, it lists US postal money orders, company checks and cashier’s checks; cash is additionally listed for in-person delivery. Payments must name the Embassy of Sudan as payee.
Use that resource to choose the accepted payment format and identify the consular office, rather than assume an ordinary card payment or personal check is accepted. The Entry Visa page separately asks mailed applicants to provide a prepaid tracked return envelope. Before dispatch, confirm the mission’s current submission arrangements and whether it needs originals at that stage. Administrative documents serve different purposes: an emergency travel-document application or no-objection letter is not a substitute for the entry permission required by the traveller’s passport and intended activity.
Register within three days and ask about exit permission
The UK government’s Sudan entry guidance says foreign visitors must register with the Interior Ministry’s Aliens Department within three days of arrival, provide two passport photographs and pay the applicable fee. Some larger hotels arrange registration, but the traveller should ask at check-in and establish that it has actually been completed. A hotel booking alone does not prove that the registration was made.
The same guidance says a single-entry visa holder needs an exit visa, although enforcement is not consistent. It directs travellers to Port Sudan Airport Immigration and notes that sponsor evidence and a fee may be required. It also says travel outside Red Sea State requires a separate permit, with processes and charges varying by destination. Confirm those requirements while there is time to obtain the documents; an unused airline ticket does not authorise departure or movement between states. The source gives no universal fee total for registration, internal travel and exit permission combined.
Nationality and vaccine documents require their own confirmation
The US State Department’s Sudan resource says US citizens with qualifying Sudanese national identification may be exempt from the entry visa and lists examples including a Sudanese passport or national ID. That exception should be checked against the traveller’s actual document, rather than extended to anyone with family ancestry. It separately warns that permits issued by one authority may not be recognised by another armed group. A permit’s existence therefore does not demonstrate that an onward route is accessible or safe.
The US resource requires yellow-fever vaccination evidence, whereas the Washington embassy’s Entry Visa page describes vaccination as recommended. Applicants should resolve that discrepancy with the receiving authorities and carrier before departure, rather than rely on the less restrictive wording. For minors, the US guidance identifies parental-consent and relationship-document requirements; families should check those separately from the adult visa.
