Sweden student work limits depend on the permit decision date

Students holding Swedish higher-education permits should check whether the 11 June rules apply, keep work records and plan renewal before their current permission expires.

Use the decision date to identify the applicable rules

Sweden’s Migration Agency says the student work restrictions introduced on 11 June 2026 apply to higher-education permits granted from that date, including applications lodged earlier but decided afterwards. For affected bachelor’s and master’s students, the starting rule is no more than 15 hours of work each week during term. This current follow-up explains an existing reform as students plan employment and renewal; it does not present the June commencement as a new November announcement.

The Agency’s rules announcement, updated on 21 August, explains the transition. A permit granted before 11 June is not immediately subject to the new work cap, increased progress standard or address-notification requirement. The new requirements apply after an extension is granted. Students should therefore retain the decision letter and check its grant date, rather than decide which rules apply from the date they entered Sweden, started classes or received the physical permit card.

Check an exception against the actual activity

The Agency’s guidance for people whose study application has been approved describes circumstances allowing more work. These include work forming part of the education, relevant university-based activities and work during June, July and August. It also describes an exception after completing a programme equivalent to at least two semesters, while the existing permit remains valid, where the person is not seeking a new bachelor’s or master’s study permit. Read the precise conditions before treating an ordinary job as exempt.

The practical distinction is the work actually performed and its relationship to the course or institution. Ask the university to identify an internship or other education-linked activity in writing, and keep that confirmation with the employment record. A convenient job title or an employer’s description of work as helpful to studies should not replace evidence that the published exception applies. If the activity is uncertain, seek clarification before accepting shifts that would exceed the ordinary limit.

The employer-facing Agency page also explains that different categories have different rights. EU/EEA citizens exercise free-movement rights, while a non-EU student holding a study permit needs the conditions attached to that status assessed. Employers should check the individual permission rather than assume all enrolled students have identical unrestricted work rights.

Keep the records needed for an extension

The official student-extension form, revised on 11 June 2026, asks whether the applicant worked for a Swedish employer during the current permit and whether work occurred outside the summer months. Its employment questions help students prepare a complete account of their work history before submitting an application. Keep employer names, work periods and relevant supporting evidence organised throughout the year, rather than reconstruct hours only when the permit is about to expire.

The extension webpage separately asks for the Swedish Tax Agency’s income summary for the period covered by the current permit, including where the student did not work. Where required, it also requests employment certificates and payslips; it lists documentary exceptions for specified education-related or summer-only work. Follow that checklist for the actual case rather than assume a bank statement alone demonstrates compliance with work limits.

For affected full-time students, the published progress standard is 37.5 credits in the first year and 45 credits in later years. The Agency provides different thresholds for permits granted before 11 June. Obtain an official transcript and, where illness affected progress, the required supporting medical explanation. Working within an allowed schedule does not remove the need to make acceptable academic progress.

Plan the filing date and confirm the charge

The Agency allows a study extension application no earlier than four months before expiry and requires submission before the current permit ends. Its published application charges are SEK 1,500 for adults and SEK 750 for children, with specified exemptions. Check the fee section before paying and distinguish the application charge from financial-maintenance evidence or tuition. Confirm the actual expiry in the decision rather than rely on the end of the academic year.

Before submitting, reconcile the permit date, work record, progress evidence and continued admission. If a claimed work exception is unclear, give a factual account and obtain guidance rather than omit employment. The official resources let the student identify the applicable rules and prepare the required evidence; they do not guarantee renewal or excuse work beyond the conditions of the permission held.
