Sweden worker-family renewals: October maintenance rules and the 2027 transition

Extensions now require a fresh maintenance assessment

Sweden changed its family-immigration rules on 1 October 2026. For families accompanying employees, the Swedish Migration Agency says the maintenance requirement, previously examined at the first application, now also applies when extending permission. This current follow-up explains the resulting preparation task; it does not present the October commencement as a new announcement today.

The agency’s employee-family notice says family members’ income may be considered at renewal, with restrictions on qualifying income. A previous grant should therefore not be treated as proof that no financial evidence is needed again. Identify the main permit category first: employee families, researchers, students and EU-related residence situations do not all follow an identical test. The named notice is the starting point for workers’ families deciding what has changed.

The existing permit date affects transitional treatment

The agency’s general October announcement says the increased maintenance amount does not apply to an extension of a permit granted before 1 October 2026 if the extension application is submitted by 1 October 2027. From 2 October 2027 the increased amount applies to all applications, including extensions. Those dates concern transitional financial treatment; they do not extend an individual residence permit’s expiry.

For illustration, a family whose existing permits expire in early 2027 should work from those expiry dates and then check the transitional conditions. Waiting until October merely because the transition remains available could miss the actual renewal deadline. Conversely, a permit granted after the reform should not be assigned the older financial amount simply because another family member lived in Sweden earlier. Keep the original decision and application acknowledgement available to establish the relevant dates.

Calculate disposable household income rather than gross salary

The maintenance guidance measures resources after tax and housing costs, according to household size. For qualifying transitional extensions, the published 2026 amount for cohabiting spouses or partners is SEK 10,314 remaining after rent; the higher published amount is SEK 13,408. Children add age-related amounts, adjusted for relevant child benefits. These are household living-cost figures, not a universal gross salary requirement for a work permit.

The same guidance normally permits household members’ income to be considered at extension and explains exclusions and transitional treatment of certain benefits. It also contains exemptions, including specified established relationships involving Swedish, EU/EEA or Swiss citizens, certain refugee-family circumstances and special grounds such as permanently reduced working ability. These have detailed conditions: citizenship or receipt of a benefit alone is not enough to decide the result. Use the Maintenance requirement resource for the actual calculation and exemption wording, rather than applying a simplified online summary to every family.

Prepare relationship, housing and income evidence together

The family-of-an-employee application guide identifies passport copies, relationship records and evidence of support. Marriage records or evidence of an established shared household address the relationship; employment contracts, payslips and housing records address a different part of the assessment. For accompanying children, birth records and the required consent from a parent remaining abroad may also be necessary.

The guide lists application charges of SEK 1,500 for adult family members and SEK 750 for children in that route. Confirm the service appropriate to a renewal or another permit category before payment. Permission cannot exceed passport validity, so a short remaining passport life can affect the period granted. The guide also distinguishes first applications, normally made and granted before entry, from an existing family’s extension. Do not submit the first-entry workflow simply because it is the first application page found in search results.

Check insurance and the change to permanent residence separately

The October employee-family notice adds comprehensive health-insurance requirements for family members of ICT permit or EU Blue Card holders staying for a maximum of one year. It also identifies a maintenance requirement for researchers’ families, including extensions. These are category-specific instructions, not evidence that every employee’s family must buy the same policy.

Finally, where the person in Sweden applies for permanent residence, the agency says the family member must apply for their own residence permission to continue living together. Put that separate application into the renewal plan instead of assuming the worker’s permanent application automatically covers everyone. The useful final check is whether each person has the correct application, evidence and deadline for their own status, alongside the household’s financial assessment.
