Switzerland graduate job search: Geneva requires filing before studies end

Current federal and cantonal guidance distinguishes a six-month search period from permission to start a graduate job. Geneva applicants face a specific pre-completion filing deadline.

The six-month search period concerns Swiss graduates

Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Migration explains that third-country nationals graduating from a Swiss higher-education institution have six months after completing their course or training to seek employment matching their qualifications. This current guide concerns that existing route, rather than a new November concession. It should not be confused with a general invitation for every overseas graduate to enter Switzerland and look for work.

The federal FAQ also describes a potential exception to the usual priority for Swiss and EU/EFTA workers where the proposed graduate employment represents an overriding scientific or economic interest. That wording requires assessment of the actual position. It does not mean that holding a Swiss qualification guarantees admission to any job. The federal FAQ is the starting point for identifying the national rule; the competent canton’s procedure then determines how a resident graduate should submit the search application and how an employer should seek authorisation for the proposed work.

Geneva applicants must act before the course ends

Geneva’s non-EU/EFTA post-studies guidance requires an application no later than fifteen days before the end of studies. Its six-month, non-renewable L permit runs from completion as recorded on the academic transcript. Waiting for a later graduation ceremony can therefore lose practical time and miss the filing instruction. The canton excludes postdoctoral fellows and graduates of schools outside the recognised higher-education list from this particular permit.

The required file includes signed Form K, a colour passport copy, the final transcript, the diploma if already available, proof of financial support for six months and accommodation evidence. Geneva directs applicants to send the request by post and says payment is by invoice. Use its linked Form K resource and the post-studies checklist together: the form covers several changes of status, while the checklist identifies this application’s attachments. No verified flat fee or guaranteed decision time is established here. Check the current cantonal charge and processing guidance before making non-refundable plans.

A job offer still needs an employer application

Zurich’s Students and Interns guidance confirms the need for financial means, accommodation and a final diploma or written confirmation of successful completion for the six-month search permission. Its employment section explains that not every completed Swiss course automatically allows the graduate to work. The proposed activity must meet the relevant admission conditions, including the stated scientific or economic-interest assessment.

The Zurich authority gives examples such as research and development, applying new technology, creating employment or generating orders for the Swiss economy. It states that the employer applies for the necessary work permit; domestic-worker precedence is not examined in that graduate assessment, but other third-country rules still apply. An illustrative employer hiring a recent Swiss graduate should therefore prepare the position’s substance and the permit request rather than assume the search document is unrestricted work permission. Geneva separately allows students who already undertook authorised ancillary work to maintain that activity while searching; that statement should not be read as approval for an unrelated new full-time position.

Salary and documentation remain substantive requirements

The federal employment-admission guidance requires foreign workers’ pay, social-security contributions and employment terms to accord with local, occupational and sector conditions. Authorities check these matters to prevent undercutting and unlawful working conditions. A graduate-priority exception does not remove those protections. The employer should be ready to explain the role, its required qualifications and the salary and conditions offered, using the applicable canton’s application requirements.

The same federal resource explains that some occupations trigger a vacancy-notification duty, subject to its defined exceptions. Employers should assess that obligation separately rather than treat every recruitment requirement as abolished by graduate status. For the graduate, the immediate practical tasks are to obtain written completion evidence, calculate the canton’s filing date and the search period’s end, and keep the existing residence document available. A submitted search application and a later employer application are different procedural events. Neither guarantees the final decision, and unresolved permission to begin a job should be clarified with the responsible canton before the start date.
