Thailand trips after the September changes: check the 30-day exemption and arrival-card requirements
This current travel guide follows the visa-exemption changes effective on 15 September 2026. It explains why passport eligibility, the correct e-Visa office and the free digital arrival card need separate checks.

Use the current exemption for the passport you will present
Travellers planning a Thailand visit should check the September 2026 visa-exemption rules before deciding that an application is unnecessary. The Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi states that Indian ordinary passport holders may use a 30-day exemption for tourism and short-term business engagements from 15 September until further announcement. This is a current preparation guide following that change, not a claim that Thailand issued a new announcement today.
The embassy's visa page separates that permission from visa categories for employment, education, medical treatment and other purposes. Applicants should identify the intended activity as well as the passport. A short business meeting and taking employment are not interchangeable descriptions. Use the embassy's exemption details for the proposed visit; do not select a category simply because its headline stay period appears convenient for the itinerary.
Check nationality and residence independently
The Royal Thai Embassy in Helsinki confirms a 30-day exemption for Finnish and Estonian citizens from 15 September, subject to the relevant conditions. That confirms the current position for those passports, not a universal 30-day entitlement for every nationality. A non-Finnish person living in Finland should check the eligibility of the passport being used rather than assume that Finnish residence establishes the same exemption.
For people applying through Helsinki, its official instructions say the applicant must be physically present in Finland or Estonia when applying. It advises submitting at least four to eight weeks before travel and not more than three months before departure. These are that mission's application-planning instructions. They should not be confused with the permitted stay on arrival or applied automatically to an applicant whose case belongs to another embassy.
Complete the free digital arrival card as a separate step
The Immigration Bureau's Thailand Digital Arrival Card manual explains the online form that replaced the paper arrival card for entry by air, land or sea. It states that non-Thai arrivals must complete the digital declaration before entry. Use the official manual and its linked portal to check the applicable position rather than assume a visa exemption also removes arrival registration.
The manual directs travellers to submit arrival information in the three-day advance period. Prepare passport details, personal and travel information, the accommodation address and any health information requested. Review the information before submission and retain the resulting card electronically or as a printout. The official service is free. A receipt from a paid intermediary is not evidence that a visa has been issued or that the correct passport details were registered.
Allow for the receiving mission’s actual processing requirements
The Royal Thai Embassy in Colombo's September notice directs applicants who need a visa to the official Thai e-Visa platform. For Sri Lankan tourist applicants it gives an indicative three-to-seven-working-day period after all required documents have been completed and submitted. It expressly says non-immigrant, Destination Thailand Visa and some resident-foreigner applications can need additional time. This is a mission-specific indication, not a guaranteed decision date for every passport.
Colombo also reserves the right to request further evidence or an interview. An illustrative applicant with travel approaching should therefore establish whether the file is complete before counting the published period. Booking a flight does not remove the requirement to qualify for the selected category. Follow that mission's current checklist and fee information; the cited notices do not establish one application charge applicable across all nationalities, visa types and consulates.
Keep the visa decision, arrival data and stay deadline distinct
For an exempt traveller, the practical sequence is to confirm the passport and permitted purpose, plan within the relevant stay allowance, then complete the arrival card close to travel. For a visa-required traveller, add the correct e-Visa application before departure. New Delhi's page identifies the e-Visa system introduced there from 1 January 2025; it also links applicants to its official application guidance and common-error material.
The TDAC manual permits updates to submitted information before travel and explains how to retrieve the record for correction. Use that function if trip or accommodation details change. An arrival card is a declaration, not an extension of permission to stay. Check the admission record issued at entry and arrange departure or the appropriate lawful immigration process before that permission expires, rather than rely on the application date or the arrival-card confirmation.
