Togo requires visa confirmation before departure as express service remains suspended

The published restriction predates this travel guide
Togo’s embassy in Berlin continues to publish instructions requiring visa applicants to obtain an electronic confirmation code before departure. Its notice says express visa issuance has been suspended under rules effective since 12 April 2024. This is a current planning guide, not an announcement of a new November restriction. The notice itself is dated 19 September 2024.
The embassy directs applicants to the government’s Voyage Togo platform and requires submission at least five working days before the intended journey. Travellers needing a visa should therefore separate submitting and paying for an application from actually receiving permission. A short-notice itinerary is not evidence that express processing will be available. Use the embassy notice to check this restriction and contact its consular section if the intended departure cannot accommodate it. An intermediary’s proposed shortcut should not be treated as official approval.
Check nationality, documents and the correct fee
The Voyage Togo About page provides a visa assistant for nationality-specific requirements. It also distinguishes tourism from immigration and professional categories. Do not assume a passport needs a visa, or is exempt, from the treatment of a different nationality.
For tourist applications, the page requires the online form, a recent identity photograph, scans of the passport’s first three pages and an air reservation or ticket when arriving by air. Passport validity must extend more than three months beyond the requested visa. Insurance, accommodation, an invitation and financial evidence are listed as recommended or optional, rather than universally compulsory uploads.
The published standard tourist price is CFA25,000 for a single entry lasting up to 15 days, or CFA35,000 for multiple entries over that period. Longer categories cost more. The page recommends applying at least six working days ahead, so allow a margin beyond the embassy’s minimum. Check the selected duration before paying through the portal; payment is not approval.
Use the same passport and confirm any transit exception
The official Frequently Asked Questions page says the passport presented at the border must be the one used for the online application. Its description of the immigration receipt explains that it carries personal and stay information, a QR code and visa references. Check those details against the actual travel document before leaving; a successful online payment does not correct a mismatched identity.
The FAQ distinguishes remaining in international transit without leaving the airport from entering Togo during a connection. Travellers planning to leave the airport should establish the applicable visa requirement and obtain approval before arrival. It also identifies the national documentation directorate in Lomé as the authority for visa extensions. Use that information before an authorised stay expires rather than assume an onward-booking change extends permission.
Some FAQ material contains older pandemic instructions. For current application planning, cross-check the portal’s About page and embassy guidance instead of treating every historical passage as a newly operative requirement.
An entry visa does not authorise paid employment
Togo’s Law2022-005 supplies a further distinction that matters when choosing a route: an entry and stay visa does not by itself confer a right to paid employment. A visitor attending an invited meeting should not assume that permission also covers taking a local job. The law is dated April2022; its inclusion here explains the existing legal framework rather than a fresh employment-policy change.
The law requires use of recognised border crossings and appropriate travel documentation, subject to applicable exemptions. It provides for online applications and envisages a prescribed alternative if the platform is inaccessible. It does not establish a general entitlement to travel first and resolve an unfinished application at the airport.
Use the official legal text to understand the limits of the chosen permission, then seek the responsible authority’s instructions for a different purpose or a technical failure. False information or activities inconsistent with the stated purpose can affect permission. Keep the approval and supporting travel records available for official checks.
