Tokelau-born adults changing their name should update the passport separately

New Zealand’s name-registration process accepts Tokelau birth evidence, but registration does not automatically alter a travel document.

Decide whether a registered change is needed

Tokelau-born adults using New Zealand documents should distinguish registering a name from updating a passport. New Zealand’s service covers citizens or people entitled to live there indefinitely, with separate adult and sixteen-to-seventeen-year-old categories. The evidence list accepts a certified Tokelau birth certificate; individual citizenship was not assessed here.

Registration is usually unnecessary for adopting a partner’s surname after marriage or civil union, or resuming a birth surname after divorce. It does not automatically update other documents or notify every organisation. Identify the actual change before paying and plan the passport update separately.

Assemble the three evidence categories on the current form

The September 2026 BDM120 form separates eligibility evidence, photo identification and community identity. Overseas-registered births require all three categories. Certified Tokelau birth evidence is accepted; two community documents from different sources, such as a bank statement and utility account, need not be certified.

Photo ID may have expired within two years; without it, complete the additional referee declaration. Sign before an authorised witness under the form’s country-specific rules. Australian police generally cannot take this declaration outside the Northern Territory. Check the full witness list before booking.

Keep registration and certificate costs separate

The government adult service quotes NZD 180 to register a name change, with payment by card or, at an office appointment, EFTPOS. The application can be posted or couriered to the listed Wellington, Sydney or London office, with booked attendance available at specified New Zealand offices. Obtain the exact current receiving address from the service before sending original or certified evidence. The form says not to return a completed application by email.

An official name-change certificate costs NZD 35 under the separate certificate-ordering page. That page identifies the information needed to locate the record, including the full name and date of change, with the birth name helpful for a search. Card payment is available; alternative ordering arrangements apply without a suitable card. An applicant born outside New Zealand should obtain the appropriate name-change certificate as evidence of the registered change, rather than assume that New Zealand will issue a revised Tokelau birth certificate. No local Tokelau registry amendment was established.

Prepare the new passport application using the actual change record

The New Zealand passport service requires a new passport to display a changed name and says ticket names must match the passport. It accepts registered birth names, married or civil-union names, the citizenship-certificate name and names changed by deed poll or statutory declaration. An unregistered nickname is not accepted. Give the old and new names, date and reason for the change.

For an overseas name change, provide the official record and an English translation if necessary; online applications use a scan, while paper applications require the original. For an overseas-born person whose change was registered in New Zealand, the guidance distinguishes changes before and after 25 January 2009 when describing supporting documents. A statutory-declaration name must be used in the passport. Someone merely adopting a married surname may keep travelling in the passport’s original name if the tickets match. Choose the correct rule for the actual change, not solely the place of birth.

Order proof and confirm any case-specific uncertainty before travel

The certificate-ordering page allows online, phone, postal or in-person requests, but its online identity questions require specified New Zealand life-event details. If the applicant cannot supply those details, use another permitted ordering method rather than invent an event. Standard postal delivery is listed as free, while courier options carry separate charges. Confirm the available destination service for a Tokelau delivery before selecting it.

For questions about the registration form, BDM120 publishes [email protected] and directs applicants to current service timeframes, allowing extra postal time. No individual processing date or passport approval was confirmed. Keep the name-change evidence until the passport file is complete, and check which name will appear on the travel document before buying tickets.
