Do not confuse lawful stay with permission to return
Australian bridging visas can permit lawful stay while an immigration matter is resolved. Home Affairs says only a Bridging visa B, or BVB, permits departure and re-entry while awaiting a substantive visa decision. Leaving with another bridging visa in effect causes it to cease. These are current instructions, not a new restriction.
A Visitor visa is not an automatic substitute for the permission a person previously held. Home Affairs says visitors must intend a temporary stay and cannot work on that visa, even while waiting for a work-related substantive application. It also advises applicants awaiting a Student visa not to enter on a Visitor visa to commence their studies. Someone who needs to return for employment or study should examine the conditions of any proposed replacement visa before treating it as equivalent.
Plan the travel period around the grant notice
The dedicated bridging-travel guidance recommends applying no more than three months and no less than two weeks before departure. That is a recommended application window, not a guarantee that a last-minute request will be decided in fourteen days. Provide evidence of the reason for travel and intended dates, and remain in Australia for both application and grant.
The BVB grant notice defines the travel period. Home Affairs says that period cannot be changed or extended after grant. If it expires while the holder is abroad, another visa must be granted before return. If it ends while the holder is in Australia and another overseas trip is needed, a new BVB can be requested. For example, a return flight after the specified last travel date would not be covered merely because the underlying residence application remains pending. Read the actual dates before finalising arrangements.
Check the charge and who can be included
The subclass 020 listing publishes a BVB charge of AUD575 except in limited circumstances, and says no processing times are available. It records a lower charge from 1 July 2026 for eligible citizens holding passports from specified Pacific countries or Timor-Leste. Nationality and passport eligibility matter: residence in one of those places alone does not establish entitlement. Check the concession list and amount presented in the application before paying.
Family members who applied together for the substantive visa may be included in one BVB request, with one application charge, but each must meet the requirements independently and have substantial reasons for travel. Only include relatives who need to leave. The listing also says a bridging visa cannot be used simply while awaiting a citizenship decision. A BVB is temporary immigration permission tied to the relevant visa or review circumstances, not a general travel facility for any pending government application.
Choose ImmiAccount or the webform before preparing uploads
The bridging-application webform directs people whose substantive application was lodged through ImmiAccount, without a review request, back to ImmiAccount. Those using the webform for a BVB must complete and attach Form 1006, provide supporting documents and pay through ImmiAccount before submission. Prepare the files first: the instructions say webform information cannot be saved and completed later.
The webform expressly excludes BVB eligibility where a Protection visa application or specified review of that case is pending, and links a separate bridging application route for Protection applicants. It also cannot be used for a Bridging visa E. Do not interpret the presence of an online travel-request option as a finding that a particular review case qualifies. The page warns against submitting another application merely because processing is causing concern, as duplicate requests can contribute to delays. Use the route matching your existing application and review history.
Check current conditions without mistaking VEVO for an application tracker
Home Affairs’ VEVO instructions explain how to inspect current visa conditions using a travel document and a transaction reference, visa grant number or visa evidence number. The system can show the visa class, expiry, permitted stay, work and study entitlements and conditions. Use it alongside the grant notice when checking what permission is currently in effect.
VEVO does not display the progress of a new application or previous visas. A grant number belonging to a visa that is not in effect may fail to retrieve the current record. Check the document number carefully, especially similar letters and digits, and notify Home Affairs of a new passport. If an error remains after checking the details, the official instructions identify the Visa Entitlement Online Enquiry form and request a travel-document copy and screenshot. An unanswered application or a system error should not be treated as evidence that return travel has been approved.
