Check that marriage is the correct residence basis
Foreign spouses of Turkish citizens preparing a first family residence application in Türkiye need to prepare evidence from both partners. This current-rule guide concerns that household, rather than a foreign resident sponsoring relatives or a family renewing an existing card. The Presidency of Migration Management lists foreign spouses of Turkish citizens among the people eligible for family residence, subject to the conditions of the route.
Its Residence Permit Types guidance requires both spouses to be at least 18, to intend to live together and to have a genuine marriage. It also requires family-wide health coverage and sufficient income: at least the minimum wage overall and at least one third of that wage for each family member. A marriage certificate alone therefore does not answer the financial and insurance questions.
Prepare the applicant and sponsor documents together
Use the Family Residence Permit Documents checklist. The applicant supplies the signed application, passport copies and original passport at the appointment, plus the marriage evidence. For a Turkish spouse, it identifies a population-register certificate showing the spouse. Foreign marriage documents require the specified authentication and notarised Turkish translation; the alternative consular approval route matters where an apostille is unavailable.
The Turkish sponsor must attend and bring the identity-card original and copy. The checklist expressly accepts a written income declaration when the sponsor is a Turkish citizen. That evidence concession should not be confused with removal of the income condition. Prepare the sponsor’s address evidence too: the checklist distinguishes ownership, a notarised rental agreement and accommodation with a third-party host. For the latter, it calls for the host’s notarised undertaking, the spouse’s undertaking if the host is married, and a current utility record.
Confirm health coverage before relying on the sponsor
The Labour Ministry’s Social Security in Türkiye guidance explains why an existing insurance number is not enough to settle access to treatment. In the ordinary insured-person and dependent categories it describes a requirement for 30 days of paid health premiums during the preceding year, with exceptions for specified situations such as emergencies. It also sets additional premium-debt conditions for self-employed and certain other insured groups.
For example, a couple relying on a self-employed sponsor should ask SGK, the social security institution, to check actual entitlement and any relevant debt conditions before assuming the foreign spouse is covered. The question is whether the spouse can receive the required coverage, rather than whether the sponsor once registered. The residence authority’s family checklist accepts an SGK provision document among its insurance evidence options.
Apply online, then budget for the assessed charges
The Presidency’s Residence Permit questions page directs applicants through e-İkamet and an appointment with the provincial migration authority. Apply before the existing lawful stay ends. It specifies passport validity at least 60 days beyond the requested residence period. Check that date before requesting a long permit, since a valid passport today may still be too short for the period sought.
That page says the system calculates fees when the application is completed and displays them on the form. Use that assessment and the official payment route rather than treating another person’s nationality-specific bill as your price. No universal total is verified here. Its stated 90-day decision period begins when the complete information and documents are submitted; it is not a promise of approval 90 days after starting an online form. A request for missing documents needs attention within the deadline actually given by the authority.
Resolve conflicting English guidance before choosing a duration
The separate older Frequently Asked Questions about Foreigners page still describes a maximum two-year family permit and includes income examples explicitly labelled 2014. The Residence Permit Types page instead states a maximum of three years at a time. Those 2014 lira amounts should not be used as a current income threshold, and the three-year maximum does not promise a three-year grant.
Ask the provincial migration authority which duration and current income calculation apply to the household. Bring the conflicting page titles if clarification is needed. This comparison establishes a public-source discrepancy, rather than an individually confirmed entitlement or a new announcement changing family residence today.
